I feel so lost.....

Okay 2nd day here and i just made my second kill in sidewinder lol a distress call so i got his large data caches and made it back to station but i cant for some reason figure out how to sell them? Its like there is no option for it, what am i doin wrong?

Nevermind i just got fined they was considered stolen thats why i couldnt sell them lol didnt know they would be flagged stolen no one saw me destroy that ship

Yes, in the Contacts section of the bulletin board at the station, you can sell data caches.

And you must be an ace to be doing that on your second day!

Oooh, well then.. I guess it wasn't a data cache you picked up, but some cannisters of data, which are illegal salvage. You CAN still sell them though, at a station that has a Black Market. That also shows up in the Contacts area.

Just so you know, any cargo you pick up in space somewhere will be listed as stolen, and you'll have to take it to a black market without letting the cops scan your ship (go in fast!). It's smuggling because the cargo is stolen (all items are somehow marked with the legal owner I guess -- so anything you just pick up in space is considered stolen, even if you didn't personally steal it).

Yeah like 90% of the cargo out in space is considered illegal or stolen. However most of the cargo found on planet is considered not stolen.....if your wondering why just toss that thought into FD's bin marked "Space Magic" along with 3d ship printing, all knowing A.I., tele-presence etc. Etc.

That made me LOL. Pages of discussion thread theory crafting distilled into ten words.

In all seriousness the ongoing "big" problems with ED, the ones that would require a redesign and many months of development time, are understandable. FD are a relatively small, resource-strapped team with a product that needs development and expansion as well as polishing if it's to continue. The fact that one trumps the other isn't really surprising. But those little things? The tiny inconsistencies whose ability to annoy players far outstrips their actual impact on the game? I simply don't understand how they survive for patch after patch without being addressed.

The flagged cargo thing is a perfect example. In the absence of a proper salvage mechanic (salvage missions are a step in the right direction) all cargo should either be legal salvage or illegal salvage, not a mixture depending on where it's found. Clearly one or other of the flags, either space cargo or planetary cargo, is wrong. So make them the same. It seems like the easiest fix in the world. And yet it survives for version after version...

And what's with the abandoned cargo on planet surfaces that's legally salvageable but protected by armed flying machines? What the hell is going on there? Aaagh!

Apologies for hijacking the thread but these things really do grate. At least I now have the mental image of the "Space Magic" bin into which to toss them.

I wish we could buy Salvage permits, or something. Space scrapping is good times, but annoying since you have to smuggle your haul in each time.

Yes, that's exactly what they are. I've run into these before, canisters labelled as "data cache" -comes in 2 sizes.
Found them in USS way out past Maia. Valuable items too, so good news for the OP!

I have always felt that if you weren't seen taking stuff, they shouldn't be marked as stolen.
It does seem weird. :D

The way it has been explained to me is the "receipt of purchased goods" system. Basically when you get scanned by authorities they are "checking" that the goods you have in your hold were purchased "legit". That's all fine and dandy but then you come across a POI on a planet and the good there suddenly don't qualify as stolen for...some...reason.... I agree that it's small things like this that shows FD's lack of follow through or planning of implemented mechanics. It can be frustrating to see what could have been. A career path as a salvager would be an interesting path to follow.
