I feel somewhat ripped off.

So like a lot of people i really like Elite : Dangerous, and as a result when the option of a 100£ lifetime expansion pass came up, i ignored the cries of my wallet and spent it, knowing that i would no longer have to worry about buying another expansion pack again. And so horizon came at no cost to me and i felt satisified with my purchase, and all was well until FX just a few days ago. Look don't misunderstand me, i think it's awesome that the new expansion is free, but having spent 100£ on the expansion pass i feel somewhat ripped off. I bought this under the belief that all further expansion would cost money, but as that no longer is the case, i essentially wasted 80£.

Look i want to support frontier, but wasting 80£ for like what, a few non-exclusive ship skins and whatnot, really feels like i've been ripped off. I'm not asking frontier to charge money for 3.0, but at least give those who payed such a large amount of money something for our loyalty and investment. Give us some super exclusive skins, a free ship, or something else. Most would argue that even that wouldn't be worth 80£ (and they may be right) but at least give us something frontier! Yes i realize that frontier is under no legal obligation to give us anything else, but that doesn't excuse the fact that this is borderline ripping customers off.

It is not a 3.0, it is extended Horizons session. As you saw, most of them are either reworks of core functionality, core improvements and very few unique fully new features. LEP is meant for these new shiny features, not feature refactoring like this.

You will get your loyality rewarded when next paid for expansion will come after this.

The flaw in your logic is the idea that just because there's no new paid content now, there never will be again.

Because...?

Season 3 may be free to season 2 buyers, but season 4, 5, 6, etc will be free to you. But we'll have to pay for them.

They have not said further expansions will be free, just the “Beyond” releases, which are core gameplay releases (and therefore difficult to gate).

I would expect future expansions for spacelegs, atmospheric planets etc to require a purchase by those without the lifetime pass.

So far this is what I interpret. There was no "3.0" shown at FX, but stuff more in likely 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, etc.

Of course I may be wrong with this. I was fully expecting to see a "3.0" paid expansion announced, and was wrong there.

Unless every expansion going forward is going to be free, I think it's a bit early to be writing off the value of the LEP.

I think FD has made the right decision here: if a lot of "Season 3" is going to be about improving core gameplay, something that implies shortcomings in stuff we've already paid for, they might have been on shaky ground trying to charge for it. Once 2018 is out of the way I'd expect to see paid expansions make a return. If they remain free or, even worse, if the game is abandoned, that would be the time to question the value of the LEP.

First of all seasons are dead as concept, Second screens during presentation clearly said 'Beyond update 2.4'. It is quite simple - it is extension of current lineup of upgrades. It will be free for Horizons users. Those who will upgrade from base game will get Horizons plus Beyond.

Why it is so hard to grasp I don't know.

Most announced features are updates to core game play.
Of course that should be free to everyone.
I paid for the LEP too and do not mind that at all.
I want all to enjoy a more engaging core gameplay.

But 2018 is not the end. Development continues.
I bet we will get more paid expansions in the future too.

It was a gamble. Please don't call it an investment because it isn't. You get nothing tangible in return. It's a game.

Sometimes, gambles don't pay off.

If I were around at the time the LEP was offered, I wouldn't buy for this very reason. I can afford each expansion as they come out.

As others have said we don't know what will happen in the future.
To be honest I've put enough hours in at this point I think it has been pretty good value for money anyway, could I have got the equivalent experience cheaper? Sure, but still good value for money.
I'm happy to have supported FD and if I happen to get more out that further down the line great, if not, oh well :)
Still, yeah, I can see why it could be frustrating.

To be fair, If you bought the LEP at the kickstarter you were backing the game to be made and the LEP was part of the package.

However as mentioned above this is an extension to Horizons and there will I'm sure be more Paid for DLC.

Nothing to feel aggrieved about as far as I can see.

Frontier - Can you come up with a system for disgruntled players to sell off the LEP to those of us who want another please? If the OP does not want his, I'll take it off him.

Make any LEP transfer fees a Special Effect donation. A price I'd happily pay.

The way I see it is that people are owed a season seeing how badly 2.x was delayed.

There will most certainly be paid expansions again, but not until 2019. One of the things that I'm fairly confident is happening, but won't matter much to players this year, is that FDev is refactoring much of the base game. We might see minor performance improvements but I'll bet it is mostly to build a new framework that will support new features coming in 2019. Now, I have this hunch because we saw how badly Frontier got slapped by delay inducing technical debt brought on by Horizons. This likely occurred from putting layer upon layer of features with quick stitching holding it all together. Getting anything stable in that sort of situation is terribly time consuming and difficult. That's why I think what Frontier is saying about 3.x is so significant. They are setting the stage for big changes and additions...

Of course, just my prediction. Though, I feel pretty confident about it.

A lifetime pass guarantees you an uncertain value of paid content for a fixed fee. Right now, today, the content delivered has had less monetary value than the fee paid. Hence the pass does not currently look like a smart investment. If and when more content comes along the pass will instantly change into a good investment.

I highlight those two words monetary and currently quite specifically. For me personally the very first day of Horizons 2.0 beta, when I stayed up until four in the morning just driving my SRV around, was emotionally worth more than the £100 I paid for the pass. Nonetheless when viewed purely objectively the fact is that after three years I have so far received less than half of that £100 worth of goods.

If the game shuts down, if Frontier goes out of business or if I get bored with it before any more content comes along I will be forced to conclude that it was after all a bad deal. Since none of those things have yet happened it's too early to judge.

Bottom line: I'm still happy with my purchase but if other people aren't I fully understand.

I think that there will probably be more paid expansions after they finish core gameplay.

But even if there's not, this kind of thing happens all the time. You buy a game for $60, buy a season pass for $30 (or all the expansions separate for $15 each). Six months after the last DLC came out the "Game of the Year" edition hits the store shelves that has the base game + all DLCs for $30.
