I figured out a way to collect Thargoid tissue samples 100% of the time that will work for everyone.

In my experience, it's easy to collect one sample, but collecting a second results in the limpet and sample detonating on your hull rather than entering your cargo hatch. Others have trouble collecting even one sample.

However last night the obvious workaround hit me. Deactivate the limpet controller in your modules screen after the limpet collects the sample and detatches.

I tried this today and it worked great. I was able to scoop the tissue sample after the limpet self destructed.

I'm only doing this because I had a crazy idea which requires multiple tissue samples, but I thought I'd share the one tangible benefit of my work.

I found the solution to the limpet exploding on my hull was bizarrely to keep the cargo hatch closed until the limpet complains - haven't lost any since doing that. Also use a cold ship, ~15% heat, and the thargoid mostly ignores you.

Nice idea about the limpet controller, hadn't thought of that one [up]

Edit: Looks like the game is buggy (surprise!) If you have the cargo door closed and the game does not flash up the 'Open Cargo Bay' message when the limpet returns then try restarting the game (I restarted the launcher too). Worked for me after several painful hours wondering what I had misconfigured.

With the cold ship, does the Thargoid ignore you while you're harvesting tissue samples? Or does it attack?

Does anyone think it's an accident that our research limpets dock with the part of the ship that the Thargons come out of?

We're effectively probing the Thargoids in what is likely a very tender spot.

And where do you think they're probing the occupants of all those escape pods they've snatched?

I actually don't think limpets are "destroying" against the hull, and the bug might be more sinister.

I made this video to try and record a potential bug with the thargon swarm (but got smashed, making it away with 8% hull...)

You can see just after the 2m mark I scoop up four research limpets while completely still. There's no explosion noises (they're quite distinct when you hit a limpet), and there is the scooping noise. But only one tissue sample is in the hold afterwards (2:56 approx)

Having now replaced my graphics card and being back online, I've discovered that the limpet doesn't always bring back a tissue sample.

Check your contacts when the limpet detatches. If it has a tissue sample you'll see it as a separate object that persists when the limpet dies (if like me you turn off your limpet controller). You can also target the tissue sample while it's still attached to the limpet.

If you get no sample in your contacts, no amount of stuffing around will produce a tissue sample in your hold.

That seems like a fairly significant bug >.>

I'll keep my eyes open when I'm on again.

Just confirming this is definitely what's happening. I launched 4 limpets, one came back with a tissue sample. That sample appeared on the contacts list.
