I finally did it...

My lovely, trustworthy, veteran Asp, loaded with huge bounties and Anaconda assassination missions to turn in, heading in to Magnus Gateway in EZ Aquarii...

Two CMDRs docking alongside me, going slow towards the letterbox. I'll show 'em how its done, I thought. Blasted through letterbox, full reverse thrust to thump down onto the landing pad. I soooo know what I am doing here, smooth as silk folks, smooth as silk.

Accidentally hit BOOST, couldn't get four pips to shields in time before the end wall of the hanger approached very very quickly.

Inevitable crash and fiery explosion and 500,000 insurance claim and at least that again in lost bounties/missions.

Yeah, that'll show 'em how its done.

Head in hands, time for a beer.

If we had achievements here then Afterburn Baby Burn would be one of them that nearly everyone's garnered. :D

I know I scared all of the good sense out of a type 7 pilot once by boosting past him through the letterbox, pulling a 180 and then accidentally hitting the boost and zipping right back out, scraping his shields both times. I decided to head to a different station to dock than try to explain to him that I wasn't trying to ram him.

I crashed a Python last night for ~3M credits loss, the first such crash I've had since early gamma… Full pips to engines and boost towards the airlock had worked for me so many times already that I had lost the appropriate respect for the hardness of the station wall, combine that with the final landing before going to sleep and boom.

lol doesn't do credit to how much I am giggling right now. Proper funny.

Here's a tip...

I always put 4 pips to shields going through the letterbox... it's saved me countless times. When you do find that your pad is at the back of the station and you're a little impatient... put all pips to engines for a second or two and and then put them back to shields... you'll still keep the extra speed once you put the 4 pips back to shields.

And oh... isn't boost disabled when your gear is down?

Of course I've done it before :)

Woo, I guess we're boost suicide buddies. I just had my first too, my cobra, and I also lost several hundred K of bounties as I only periodically get to Fed/Alliance space to turn those in.

For me it was using FAOFF while flying to the letterbox - something I regularly do. There's a problem toggling flight assist with my throttle (sometimes it gets the position wrong if it wasn't zeroed when I switch) and I found myself flying a lot faster than I intended. Panicked a bit, tried to hit the reverse throttle button, which unfortunately in my panic I hit the other easily accessible thumb button, the boost...

I actually WOULD have had a fairly profitable hour of mission running - would have made about 200k credits (which is decent for mission running). The real point of the mission running was to unlock the Viscount mission, which I did get, so that was a bit of a silver lining there.

I was in a Type-6 full of naughty things the security forces would frown upon. Now I've tested it so I knew that a Type-6 can go through the thinnest section of letterbox without it crashing, so full shields and time to rush in to avoid the scan. Remembering to ask for docking permission (this time) and in I go through the letterbox and no scan, find the pad and land on it. Whooo hooo!! And in that brief moment of cockyness I press that space bar without looking and <Launch> Arghhh... Ok I can do this, rush out turn around and rush back in that's all I had to do. So full speed out of the station, bump into another ship which slows me down enough for the security ships to perform a scan. :( Blummin ummer lol

That's my docking mantra - 4 pips to shields, landing gear down to prevent boosting. It's a shame that I forget to request docking permission now and then;)

Happened more than once. One time I barely escaped alive. I always lower my landing gear before getting into a station.

The wonderful sharing of mess ups - not only makes me laugh but reassures me no matter how bad I am the wonderful skilled pilots will make me feel better by occasionally reducing them selves to my level. Thank you one and all.

One of my favourite tricks is trying to exit too quickly and smashing into the lower lip of the letterbox. Not done it for a while after writing off two Cobras, must be overdue an accident now.
