I finally got to use Life Support

After playing for almost 9 months, I finally got to try the fabled life support system.

I was in my Clipper just cruising about when I got interdicted by an Elite Courier. I submitted and things went very well for 99% of the fight. Despite his incessant chaff spamming, I got the guy down to 8% hull. One more pass would have and should have done the job. Instead, I got hit by the grand daddy of all alphas, lost my last ring of shields and the windscreen went POP (Courier in Anaconda's clothing?).

There was a station nearby so I headed there with only 7:30 mins of oxygen to spare (why did I trade safety for jump range?[cry]). Within seconds of entering SC, I am interdicted again by that Courier. I submited, boosted and low wake'd, only to get interdicted a second time almost immediately. I was tempted to finish the pest off but the same engineer who gave him magic FSD cooldown probably gave him auto hull repair as well. Don't know for sure because I was too scared to check.

By this time I was very near the station but something was amiss. The thing is when you lose the canopy, you lose the HUD as well. The only way to tell I was headed in the right direction was by looking at the compass. According to this wonderful piece of equipment, I was headed directly for the station. However, all I saw was a planet growing ominously larger. Suddenly the penny dropped ... the station was on the other side!

I skirted round and reached the station without further harrassment from the courier, entering the mail slot with about 2 mins to spare, jelly legs and a very full bladder.

All in all, a very exciting encounter although I feel the AI cheated.

Edit: Forgot to mention the second time I got interdicted, it was an FSD failure despite throttling down (Thank Felicity for giving the Clipper a 480 boost)

Feel free to share your near death experiences here.

Good story.
Once you lose the canopy, you can still see the target destination in the bottom corner of the screen, where there is still a bit of glass left.
You find yourself flying in a big arc towards your destination, but once you get used to the compass and the distance gauge, don't even worry about it.
The only thing to worry about is whether you have enough time left. The reason why I spend a little extra for a life support that gives me 25 mins to dock.

I skew the view to bring the hud into an unbroken part, then I wait for that little glimmer spot to show, then I can view straight ahead aiming for that, using pilot assist I keep it in the blue, then wait for the safe to drop to normal space, I've become adept enough that only 10 minutes air supply is needed, yup you guessed it, I've had many canopy blowouts.

I use the compass and the nav panel so I know how close I am. Once through the slot you can breath again. landed once at an outpost where the was no repair, had to run to a station, had 10 seconds left.

Thanks all for the tip about using unbroken corner of canopy to see ... I hope I never have to use it! :D

All in all, I am glad this happened when I already had lots of hours logged. If I were a relative newbie, either the Courier or planet would have gotten me.

BTW, does anyone know if NPCs repair to full health when they re-interdict you?

On the platform stations, enter the hanger, air supply will be restored, just be sure it has a repair facility.
