I finally puy my Oculus on!!! need suggestions

Ok at long last I could grab it and stick it to my face and wooooow! Ok it is amazing and seems to work smoothly on my rig.

Now. I had to upgrade my OS from win8 to win10 and I was not able to restore ED in steam library. My fault: I started the download over the old installation folder and steam of course deleted all the files. So I can't still say the "oh my God" thingy everyone says when playing ED for the first time in VR! :p
I will share my experience by tomorrow then the download will be complete.

By now I would ask you Oculus users if it is normal to have all that god rays out and around the lens sweet spot. Also there is a bit of chromatic aberration around text and lines. I know that SweetFX comes with some scripts to use inside of games. I already tested it on my cheap VR headset. But is there a way to fix god rays and chromatic aberration out of SweetFX? it seems I cant find anything useful on google and the Rift comes without any lens adjustment utility.

I will appreciate some help as an Oculus newbie.

Thanks. :)

The first thing I did — which I would recommend — was get in all of my ships so I could experience each of them in VR. I also purchased several ships, such as the Eagle and Imperial Eagle, that I'd bypassed on my way up the ranks just to see them in VR. I even rebought a Sidewinder, and it actually has a great cockpit despite being a throwaway ship.

As for the godrays, I have them but have gotten used to them — sort of.

Have fun!

If you dabble in combat, get out to a res or CZ in your best ship, ASAP. I am in pure love with it. I kitted out my FDL with fixed weapons and took it to my local hazres and I'm having the most video game fun I've had in a LONG long time. I should mention that fixed weapons are incredibly easy to use in VR, and being able to look around so easily makes you inhearantly better at fighting.

The godrays seem bad at first I honestly outside of the launch screens don't really notice them that much anymore. More exciting than that is the dithering from what we are hearing which should help the banding which if true will go a long towards making the experience better. Enjoy I am sure you will.

There shouldn't be any chromatic aberration except at the edges. in the middle sweet spot everything should be fine. make sure the Rift is adjusted well and you're consistently looking right into that sweet spot. Make sure you have the IPD adjustment spot on too. It takes a few tries to get the straps on - they don't need to be tight but you do need the Rift to sit properly so you stay in that sweet spot.

The god rays are a bit different for everyone - people who wear glasses a lot seem to find the god rays less of n issue.
As Raptoid said, the god rays are worst in high-contrast scenes - like white text on black backgrounds etc. And you do get used to the experience. The full motion tracking will be a change for you.

Make sure the lenses are clean, and avoid touching them at all. You only need a soft lens cloth (there's one in the box somewhere). Luckily they do tend to stay clean, being inside the Rift and away from sticky fingers.

Learn to look around using your head (ie look around with your eyes less). It becomes second nature after a while.

In ED, I often suddenly notice that I haven't thought about god rays, screen door effect or the low resolution in aaaages.
Because I've been in the game - and that is what VR is for. Enjoy! :D

All right guys I'm in. Everything looks great and the scale is amazing. I put quality to VR ultra and I don't see a single FPS drop in stations. I think I'll play this way until I get used to VR in ED.
There is a thread about making ED look crystal clear but I see there's some work to do with code and messing with tools. Maybe I should look at that sometime. What do you suggest? is it worth spending some hours to push my card to max eyecandy?

What video card do you have? If you have the horsepower, increase HMD quality. And you can decrease super sampling to offset HMD quality increase if your fps takes a hit.

I've got the horses. I played a bit with SS and HMD quality. There is a good improvement in jitter (or judder?) reduction. The little chromatic aberration is still there. There's is nothing I can do with lense distance adjust. My head is kinda big and I cant get past 70mm (al the lever to the right). Maybe I can do some improvement with SweetFX injection? there's a chromatic aberration setting in the Oculus native shader. Also I have just a little bit of image warp I'd love to get rid of.

After some quiet anaconda mining session to get comfortable with motion sickness I jumped in my courier for a BH session into the 'roids. Man it was so exciting! Oh my good Lord.

To my knowledge sweetfx does not work anymore since the official release oculus/vive drivers being that they are no longer working as extended mode!

I'm on an Asus GTX 1070 8MB GRRD5. It's getting better and better the more I tweak settings. God rays are still visible on stars, but I'm getting used to them. After few minutes I dont even notice them. Theres still some chromatic aberration. I'm trying to move the rift to find a better setting, but it does seem my IPD is larger than the CV1's maximum 71....

With a 1070, you'll be bale to use HMD Quality 1.25 with SS still at 1.0
Most other setting should be high.
Drop Blur to Off, Ambient Occlusion to low, Depth of Field Off, Bloom to medium and shadows to medium. This will get you some more power to use with HMD Quality.

I guess that my i7 @4 Ghz is helping a lot because I could push to 0.65/2.0 SS/HMD and almost everything to maximum quality. I only put terrain things to medium, because I have some stuttering near settlements. That little chromatic aberration is mostly present out of the lenses sweet spot and I guess there's nothing more I can do about that. I did a lot of google research and it seems there is no way to fix that via software.

Elite looks great and awesome in virtual reality. I cant imagine myself getting back to a 2D monitor. It is a totally new experience and it gave me a new fresh boost of enthusiasm! :D

Woo! Glad you like it!

You're right about the chromatic aberration - there's nothing we can do. Oculus (and Vive) correct for the lenses, but the sweet spot is where you're meant to be focussed. Like the god rays, you'll learn to look around more with your head and after a short time, you won't notice.

2D at 4K might be crisp and clear but you can't see out of the window. Bah humbug!
