I got attack by the funeral cortege

I've been doing a lot of assassination missions in the systems I'm also trading in. One of the local factions isnt too pleased with me because of this and they eventually turned red. But even when they turned red I could still dock at their stations and no one attacked me. hey just weren't very pleasant. But I must have pushed them too far. I was on an assassination mission in my conda last night and dropped into a USS. There was a red T9 there and he started the splurge about where the target was but before he finished he started shooting at me and I never got the mission update. Odd I thought, shortly before bowing him up. The next uss was the funeral cortege. I bloody hate those things such a waste of time. So I was quite happy when they all started shooting at me ;)

I had an odd one last night of a similar type.

I have been trading between 2 systems for a while now, then took a break to go to Sol after they fixed the permits bug.

When I got back I noticed that although my rating with the Feds was still unfriendly, the faction in my 'home' system that was allied with them was now hostile, and their ships appeared red on my scanner.

No idea why, hadn't shot anything, or done any missions, just a straight trade thing, then a trip to Sol for some sightseeing!.

Still, I figured I'd try and get back on their good side, so I got out my Cobra, took a pirate hunting mission from them in the same system, and went out to see what I could find.

Dropping into a USS, I found a funeral barge, with 2 Lakon 6s, and 2 Sideys as escort, all red.

The escorts immediately attacked me, and became wanted, so I killed the lot of them (for a measly 200cr a piece).

The silly thing is, 10 mins later, the same thing happened!

Oh well, it all increases my combat status I suppose! :)

Hmm.... not by much though. I believe the combat rating is based on bounties earned not number of kills

"...based on bounties earned not number of kills"

Will be needing source for this because since '84 my understanding of this has been the complete opposite.

I've wondered about this but surely it would have to be based on kills otherwise there would be no way for pirates to increase their rating.

Pirates dont increase their rating. If all you do is PvP you could be the best combat pilot in the game but have a 'mostly harmless' tab

The most effective, fun and lucrative thing to do to improve rep is bounty hunting, I have found.
An hours session at a Nav Beacon with my Viper (and without other CMDRs) is good for about 40 kills, 300k bounty overall and about half the way of a rep increase with a major faction, once you go cash in with them.
As an added bonus, especially in Alliance and Anarchy systems you get bounties belonging to all major factions, so you increase rep with all of them.

I think we are talking about pilot ranking not faction ranking. Moving from Competent to Expert is a massive grind. I dread to think what it takes to get to elite.

I agree. It was always based on number of kills.
I remember using a hex editor back in the day, to give myself Elite status by altering the kills value in the save-game file to 65535.

I'll burn in hell for it, I'm sure!! ;)
