I got blown up by AI last night when I had 47% hull

Fair enough I guess as I've done that to Ai before but I would love to know if there is a way to defend against this type of attack. It would be nice to have an alert that a certain sub system is being attacked and have the ability to press a few buttons to enhance shielding in that area or at least given a vector to hide that subsystem from further attack...anything other than how it works at the moment. It comes as quite a shock that I blow up at 47% hull as the figure has no relevance as to how much longer I might survive in a battle !

I said way back in 1.2 that hitting sub-systems would only be fun until the NPC's began using it as well. Sarah did an excellent job making the NPC's fight the same way PC's do, and here we are.

What's good for the goose, etc.

This aspect of play needs a revamp and always has. I have no issue with targeting the sub-system with a red box, but the player needs to hit the target, not a computer.

I think Sarah said the AI's dont target the power plant because it would be a bit too much. Can't remember where I read that though.

I don't have an issue with my gimballed lasers targeting the sub system and hitting it but what about some kind of alert to what system is under attack. There is no warning and if your shields are down and a major sub system is attacked you can blow up with more than 50% hull still available. I also enjoy the extra challenge of NPC's attacking sub systems but there is no way to defend against it. Running is the only option but it would be good to have some kind of sub management like the power distribution where you enhance protection for that particular system maybe. I'm just plucking ideas out the air.

I'm not sure what was blown up but it was quite a surprise.

Well the only thing we can do atm is look at the modules panel quickly. It is wise to check when shields are down.
Also I think FD want us to improve our flying skills. Like hide your power plant from damage.

We have brilliant flying ships and we are not exploiting the awesome flying these ships can do.
I destroyed a Cmdr the other day by going for his power plant. He was on 80% hull but he let me aim and hit the power plant.

This is just a learn 2 fly issue.

Just random bad luck. But I totally agree that there should be a critical warning when thrusters or power plant get below 15%.

Two things, first if that's a bug that can happen and they do target the sub system then its needs to be fixed ASAP as that's just rediculous. Also the unlying power plant really needs a major rework. The fact that the sub system has no extra protection to it and there are no warnings at all when its being attacked and can seemingly be attacked from both top and bottom is a bit insane even on other players. They need to do something about that as its really a cheap way to be able to destroy a ship while ignoring 50percent of the hull health.

Dont let your shields go down .. use banks .. if your shields are down you need to run or get out of there or you risk module damage and destruction.

I think Sarah said the AI's dont target the power plant because it would be a bit too much. Can't remember where I read that though.

In 1.2 I was interdicted in my combat A/B ASP, Drives targeted and rail-gunned by an NPC, right after he took my shields down, my hull had barely a scratch, and the <insert expletive> left me to float in space, which was odd because he didn't finish me off.

I was a bit cross, to say the least.

Like I said in another thread, if I were designing space ships, I know precisely where I wouldnt put my power-plant.. seems pretty unlikely that the FSD would be on the outside too, same with the shield generators and life support. Now, if you had to blast through the hull to get to those components - that would be a bit different.. so hull drops to some percentage (perhaps locally - front/rear/left/right/top/bottom at which point the modules behind that section start becoming "exposed" to damage.. still dont think popping a single module should pop your ship though, it should significantly cripple it though.

Out of interest, what ship were you using? Certain ships tend to be more vulnerable to this, since their powerplant is close to their centre, and will take a pounding even if the enemy is just aiming at your ship in general.

You're informed if your canopy is compromised and going critical - I would think it would make sense to at least let you know if key subsystems are going critical as well. Power plant at least, but I can't see why not all of them.

Seen this a few times, I tend to bale out of fights now when I start to see anything more than 10 per cent hull damage as it appears to be a very slippery slope!

Armor needs to protect modules. Simple as that. Ships like the Anaconda were designed for some reason with their critical power plants laughably exposed, and any armor you add doesn't protect it.
