I've been going crazy trying to solve this. Looks like everyone has various problems, some people none. I'll post my scenario and fix in hopes to help others.

Problem:
Since upgrading to Windows 10, I could not get the Oculus Rift runtime to work. This is not directly related to ED but I post this here because it relates to using the older drivers for the Oculus Rift which we need to play ED in VR. The sevice for runtime 0.6.01 would give messages upon startup that the service crashed (forgot the exact words). Basically the drivers werent working. (The current runtime, 0.8.0.0 did work).

Fix: I found this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/3hbblz/any_luck_with_ed_oculus_dk2_windows_10/
and they linked to this page which I followed exactly and got it to work: http://www.vrbites.com/tech-howto/run-oculus-0-6-0-1-in-windows-10/

I hadn't played in a few days and when I tried to play again, it didnt work again! I checked my nvidia graphics driver version and turned out it was higher than that from the page suggestion. I'm thinking it got automatically updated and caused the rift to not work again becuase when I switched back to version 350.12 it worked.

So in short, you have to enable the Rift Runtime install package to be windows 8 compatible before installing, as well as making the executables created after installation under C:/Program Files(x86)/Oculus/service windows 8 compatible. And also apparently important is that you must use nvidia graphics driver # 350.12 or else it won't work.

Hope this helps anyone.
