I Got Someone To Buy Elite!

He's only a whippersnapper (55+), has only been gaming online since the 1990's, and was earning six digits as a lead coder for decades. In military aerospace. He beats the stuffing out of everyone at any game, computer or not.

So, he's a noob rookie, who knows nothing about flying sims at all. Or, software development. Or, about gaming. :)

He saw the Steam sale, had me give him an online demo, and a detailed verbal and written summary of all the game. Military report level detailed.

Here's the shocker: To heck with Horizons and Beyond. He's only buying the base game, for an hour's flying around per night. It wasn't worth the extra $7.50 USD to him for Horizons/Commander Pack.

And, especially, to heck with Engineers.

He doesn't want anything beyond a Cobra 3. He'll be joining my squadron. He doesn't see the need for wasting ten million. Also, he wants to fly his own ship, not be crew on someone else's ship. So much for Multicrew. We'll spend an hour a week on winged up activities, at the most. He just wants to fly around.

He's got lots of RL money. It isn't a matter of being cheap. He's buying a full HOTAS (which he had at work to test his stuff), and a premium box. Something about two other flying games coming out as well.

He wants to spend his time having fun.

That is what Elite looks like to veteran gamers from the outside. Beyond the base game and flying, it's no fun. All the "cool stuff" beyond Wings was wasted. Not even worth $7.50 on a Steam sale.

To all those dizzy with their carriers, and the prospects of Odyssey, this should be a screaming warning sign. Not like it will change Frontier's mind, of course... :(

Yeah im like that with any new game.. before you know anything about it, you only buy the cheapest ticket in.

You start upgrading only if you get to the love stage.. mostly out of the love not really intention to play it seriously... Because you fall in love with it well before you're ready for the dlc just impulsed.. and probably are well away from mastery / confidence as well.

Erm, what the heck are you on about ?
What a load of rubbish :D

It's called paving your own way, freedom of choice, play style, etc.....
He likes the base game, good for him :)
I love it all, good for me :)
(p.s. I too have dosh :D )

There's a certain art to landing at planetary bases, especially on higher-G worlds, and a lot of people get some fun out of driving the SRV.

So I wouldn't say that Horizons was a complete waste of money.

On the other hand so many features added since then have been semi-broken (wings, installation CZs), completely broken (multicrew) or simply not finished (where's our CG-like mechanism for station repair?) that I can understand why someone might think otherwise. It's not so much a question of development of the game being half-baked, as of someone routinely forgetting, or simply not making the effort, to turn on the oven.

Everyone's idea of fun is their own definition of fun. Glad to see he's enjoying one of the parts of Elite, but to assume that is the best for everyone is a bit of a stretch.
Clarification: It's his purchasing decision, not defining playstyles for everyone.

It's also a (late) wake-up call for Frontier. Veteran non-Elite players might only find the basic game attractive. Odyssey looks definitely pitched at a younger crowd. Problem is, it might be too late, as Elite is quite niche.

It's my pal's opinion that all the dev time was wasted. Since he is the F-18, that counts for something more than the ordinary forum GED in coding.

Elite gets a lot better once you stop concerning yourself with what other people want from a computer game, irrespective of their IRL bank account.

The key is that he's a pro, who never drank the original Brit version, and therefore has no emotional attachment to the franchise. I'm just the military advisor to one of his projects...

Correction - ONE veteran non-Elite player has decided that he will only find the base game attractive.

I think you might need a bigger sample size before claiming it's a wake-up call!

Missed it, Maggie. It isn't the size of the bankroll. It's that isn't wasn't worth picking up nearly for free.

Yeah, this totally changed my view of Elite. Nothing should be added. Cancel Odyssey! It's all unneccessary nonsense! An intransigent older guy I heard about second-hand and hasn't actually played the game yet has been the one to see through the shoyt and enlighten us all

What he said is what lots of people say when they start out. In three months, it's likely he'll have bought Horizons or he won't be playing the game any more.
