I Guess I Shouldn't Have Taken that Tycoon Mission

First off, I'm not moaning about this, it was my fault and I'll take my losses and bruises.

I saw the chance to make some money and I lost. I picked up a well paying delivery mission in my A-rated Cobra MK III with 32 tons of cargo space. It was tycoon level and required me to deliver 90 tons of goods so I was looking at 3 round trips. I'm rated Merchant in Trade and Mostly Harmless in Combat but I've taken out Master level NPCs in my Cobra so I didn't think about the level difference. I also don't keep a list with the levels nearby so I didn't expect a Deadly in an Anaconda to attack. Remember Trade-Tycoon == Combat-Deadly.

On the first delivery I successfully evaded an interdiction, at the time I wasn't aware it was an Anaconda. I was able to deliver 30 tons and made my way back to the pickup location.

On the second trip I was was losing the interdiction and submitted, not knowing it was a Anaconda I thought I'd give combat a go. Was I wrong! The 1st thermal attack took out my shields and my hull was nearly gone in under 30 seconds, I checked the logs and it took 3 hits to get to 19% hull, the final blow was my ramming into the NPC, not on purpose, the NPC was extremely agile and got very close giving no room to maneuver. So that was 1 ship rebuy.

I almost decided to abandon but thought I might give it another try, figuring the NPC might not try again. Again I was wrong but lost the interdiction, tried to fight but lost my ship in just about the same time. I could have high-waked but I'm usually against that. Plus, if I returned, the NPC would probably be there again, persistent little pest. So that was rebuy number 2.

With only 30 tons delivered and no more cargo at the depot, I had no choice but to abandon. Needless to say that between the rebuys and fines for not completing the delivery I was back to square one from the day before. I'm unsure how or when the partial complete is available but it wasn't there for me. I took the rest of the day off from playing ED as it can be a little disheartening to lose so much. I played a little ESO where there's no real loss even when dying unless you wipe in a dungeon. The next day I brought out my Dolphin and completed some nice, safe, tourist missions to make back what I lost and more. None of the passengers even demanded anything special.

Looks like I need to get a tougher ship and stay away from missions that are too many levels above my skill set. Just need to raise some credits for that Krait Phantom. Still, that Anaconda seemed awfully fast and agile for what I always assumed was a lumbering beast of a ship. My Cobra isn't engineered but I've never had an issue staying behind, on-top or underneath an NPC ship. In this case I couldn't out run or out maneuver this ship.

See if you can unlock Felicity Farseer and get the G3 dirty drive mod for your Cobra. With A-rated thrusters and G3 dirty drives you should easily be able to outrun any NPC’s that give you trouble. When you submit to the interdiction drop some chaff and then boost boost boost away. Zig zag somewhat too to avoid fire. The Cobra Mk III is a pretty fast ship and none of the larger ships will be able to keep pace.

EDIT: Put 4 pips to engines and 2 to sheields, don’t even bother with weapons on that ship. Make it as light and fast as possible.

You need to engineer your Cobra a bit, then you can simply outrun any NPC that can outshoot you.
Dirty Drives and a thermal resistant shield work wonders.

But usually you should just win the interdiction minigame, if you lose against an anaconda in a Cobra, you do something wrong.
Don't you throttle down to 50% for maximum maneuverability? (Yes, even below the blue)

When you get interdicted, hit the "select hostile enemy" key ('H' by default, iirc) and the ship interdicting you will be selected. So you can quickly evaluate what kind of trouble you're in and formulate a plan on how to proceed.

While engineering might help I'm wondering what this Anaconda was using, it certainly wasn't stock. According to Coriolis my A-rated CM III boosts at 445 m/s, a stock Anaconda can only boost at about 1/2 that speed. I should have been able to run circles around him.

I don't run chaff, normally a shield booster and a PD. But in this case I was dead in less than 30 seconds even when boosting as fast and often as I could, I literally couldn't get way from him in a straight line. I know the higher level NPCs get better ship outfitting, can't remember if they also get some engineering.

I love flying my Cobra and while I won't get rid of it, I think I'd like a bigger ship, more hull strength, more shields, more cargo, greater jump range. Engineering the Cobra would be a first step while raising the credits to buy and then engineer something bigger, like the Krait Phantom.

I do throttle down a bit, in the heat of the moment I may have forgotten to do that after the first interdiction.

Come to think of it I had forgotten to bind that. I switched from an X56 to the Warthog and the default bindings on the Warthog didn't include the hostile enemy for some reason. I also miss my vertical and lateral thrusters on the throttle thumbstick of the X56, I modified the Warthog mouse nub to a larger stick but it's hard to get used to using my index finger to maneuver vs. the thumb. I often used the thrusters to avoid enemy fire when facing them.

You could call an experienced cmdr for help next time, either to guard you on your cargo haul or to help you hauling!

I'd like to but playing in anything but Solo is difficult at best. I'm in the middle of nowhere USA with a wireless ISP behind a double-NAT, I'm lucky I can play at all. Latency isn't bad locally but it's really bad to the UK.

If you're of a mood to rank up in imperial ranks, the Imperial Clipper sounds like it would be a good fit. Costs a lot less than a Phantom and still keeps a lot of the Cobra's manoeuvrability. Also has the same hardpoints and utility slots as a Phantom, but can hold much more cargo. It is a large ship though, so limits where you can land it. Once upgraded it's certainly capable of shooting down those Anacondas.

Hard lesson learned? Gotta work on throwing off interdictions. Find a friend, or a local Killer Whale and play Interdiction Tag. Not only is it fun, but it helps.

An Imperial Clipper isn't a bad idea, it might take me a while, I'm only a Serf at the moment. I have been offered some rank up missions to Master but Baron is a long way off. I want an Imperial Cutter someday so I'll need to get started on that any way.

The Phantom has been recommended to me in another thread, I like the medium size and it looks to be a very capable all-around ship. There are many other aspects I'll need to look at and I may only be able to decide once I've purchased and flown anything new.

Diamondback is fast and manoeuvrable as an interim step, as is the Asp, though some don't like the engine sound. I'd take a look at them and see if you like.

While I'm sure I could use more practice up until now I've rarely lost an interdiction, although I probably submit and kill my attacker about 2/3rds of the time. Isn't there something to do with the relative masses of the 2 ships as well? I've never been interdicted by such a large ship before so the practice could certainly help.

I started a thread recently asking for advice on my next step up from the CM III, I got lots of helpful answers including the DB and Asp variants. While I haven't firmly decided on anything yet the Phantom is on the top of my short list, but I'm not excluding anything.

Krait Phantom is a nice ship and would be the choice if you're looking to keep outposts open to you. I went for the Clipper as at the time it was a choice of that or the T-7 and I wanted to do more than just trade. There's a bit more choice in that price bracket now. Have fun getting to your Cutter, however you do it.

a) Before buying a more expensive ship, and as a result flying a ship with a much higher re-buy, learn how to evade interdictions. You won't need a tougher ship if you don't lose the interdiction.

b) For quite some time high ranked NPCs have engineered modules, most noticeable are the engineered thrusters. Add that high ranked NPCs are really good at PIP management and you get NPCs that are quite good at outmaneuvering unprepared players. Deadly and Elite Anacondas love to reverse U-turn and as a result they get all the advantages they have - they lure you into face tanking, they have the advantage bigger shields. Don't follow them directly, barrel roll to one side and try to force them to abandon their maneuver.

c) Don't get the Phantom, take the Krait Mk II. It's the overall better mission runner compared to the Phantom. And as a bonus it has more firepower.

d) stay away from high ranked Anacondas, FGS and that Alliance ChiefChallengerwhatever - or to make it short, all high ranked ships that can have a SLF hangar. A hostile SLF can ruin your day quite quickly unless you can brute force kill a engineered NPC Anaconda.

Did I mention, learn to evade interdictions? Never submit. If the NPC wins, don't fight. Evade the attacks and stay close to the NPC (but outside it's line of fire) until you can jump out.

Good luck.

One downside of the Cobra is that it isn't particularly fast, maneuverable, or tough, as I found out twice in the same night early in the game. Neither is the Type 9, as I found out a month or so ago, and it costs way more to lose. It happens.:D

For the price and rebuy cost the Cobra Mk III is pretty fast and agile although it isn't tough. I'm not comparing it to engineered ships since that's a cost all to itself. I like running around in it and I've survived so long as I use my head. I'm pretty good at combat with it so long as my NPC opponents aren't more than a few levels above me. While I rarely have lost an interdiction to a ship near my own skill and class I prefer to fight, not run. In the case of the Anaconda the best course would have been to not take a Tycoon level trade mission.
