I guess I'm not as easily impressed as others...

Here is the immersion breaking problem with it all. Space does not feel colonised in the game by even one real civilisation let alone bringing cultures or diverse nations, factions or even lifeforms into its space. It is populated by the same ships, same stations, same planets, same starts. Bad news is look at the diversity on Earth, cars, bikes, trucks and a million different versions of each with each nation bringing style and culture to what it designs. Thats the problem, FD need to create it ALL to feel real and ATM its just not real. Modding and community additions would save this game, how that would be handled I dunno but you want groundbreaking or something for the future? Then thats it.

Due to Elite being mainly procedurally generated there isn't much wow factor for me when it comes to the environment

Seeing derelict ships on the verge of collapse, ancient civilisations and architecture would be awsome. Think Mass Effect or even Star Citizen (oh noez I said it)

Each system is just generally the same, apart from different colour stars and some stations there isn't much in terms of diversity.

A lot of people on here can look at two stars and sit gazing at it. Personally I don't find it interesting at all, when you've seen it 50 times over it loses its wow.

Procedurally generated games no doubt a huge amount of content, but unfortunately they usually lack substance

I think a lot of this has to do with the size of the universe. The developers will certainly inject unique objects, events, phenomena into the game (asteroid stations, wreckage, ancient civs....etc) as various storly lines call for it. But you will not be instantly taken to these right away. Elite is not a Kon-Tiki tour of the universe where you're just shuffled from one interesting place to another. You will actually have to play the game and uncover various points of interest for yourself. But why not enjoy a particularly beautiful asteroid ring, or unlikely sunset on the way there.

"Well that's just, like, your opinion man."

Personally I prefer the stories that come out of Dwarf Fortress to the story of Dragon Age. I suspect I will continue to feel that way comparing Elite to Mass Effect.

This is not a novel idea to this game, but by far it's best IMO. How would it be handled? Why not just setup COMMUNITY GATES which send people to parralel universes. Those who want vanilla ED, play vanilla. Those who want a modded experience, navigate to a portal and pow, instant community content.

Sigh, I long for the days of community-driven mod contests. Remember how much the Unreal Community Packs added to UT2K4?
