I have been thinking about something

Elite VR with my Oculus at HMD 2.0 and ultra settings at 90 fps(ASW of course) is truly g fantastic. No game ever comes close to the incredible feeling of "being in the game" of instead "watching it" on a monitor.

But....why am I not playing it then? But instead other non-VR games?

Does anyone else have the same problem?

I almost have a bad conscience because of this.

We live in a truly unique era. There are a lot of really good games out there. I don't always play Elite but it scratches a very specific itch (especially in VR) and I will always find myself coming back to it.

I know that feeling!

Once I have 'mastered' the parts of a game I am interested in, I tend to lose interest. ED's flight model is so cool, I feel I have yet to master it. I have however got pretty good so ED piques my interest less than it used to.

Sadly though, apart from racing sims, which I am also becoming bored with, I have zero interest in other games. (Maybe GS games like Paradox Interactive's)

Sometimes you just need a break.

And sometimes you just need to put your feet up and shoot some demons.

I'm currently replaying doom myself at the moment.

OP, I have bought the Oculus Rift 2 times, thus far. I also built a computer to handle VR, but each time, I have returned it. So it's not just you. While the technology is great and it was immersive, it just didn't click with me. I also didn't care for wearing it, regardless of how much it weights...

But, it is definitely a step in the right direction.

I think I would prefer a 3 screen wrap around system that was touch controlled.

I am sorry but its not the hardware that is the problem. I love wearing the thing for hours end. Instead i think it is the game.

No matter how awsome it is to play Elite in VR i always loose interest after some days.

It does not feel right when that happens. Instead i go play indie games with retro style graphics. Light years from the Elite VR experience!

A 3-screen wrap around is what I was using before VR and still havent looked back. Actually I tried my old monitors couple months ago and lasted all of 5 minutes. But to each thier own right?!

It's fine to take a break, I play alot of Elite in VR and have done since the game was in early beta. I'm not sick of it yet and constantly find new things to do. That said I do take breaks and play other VR titles for a while, for example I recently completed Lone Echo and Wilsons Heart. Both are fantastic experiences. Currently Minecraft in VR is taking up a lot of my time, I hated it when I tried it in 2D on my monitor years ago but in VR it's a whole different experience. I just can't stop building!

Elite still takes up the majority of my game time and I haven't picked up a monitor game in a good 5+ years now other than about 20 hours playing the new Zelda. Ultimately I found even that to be too much of a disconnection to enjoy in the same way I do VR gaming and have yet to finish it and very much doubt I will.

If you like retro gaming and VR I highly recommend New Retro Arcade, it allows you to emulate loads of old classics in a VR arcade complete wih customisable cabnets for that truely authentic feel.

Alien Isolation and Doom 3 BFG have great VR mods available for them, are well worth a look and cost mere pounds to buy.

If you want value for money out of your Rift there are tonnes of great experiences out there and Elite is always here to come back too like a nice hot drink on cold winters day. It always calls me back, there is nothing quite like it even for all of its faults.

While it is true that monitor games are dead to me there is nothing wrong with enjoying them if you still find you can :D

At the moment I'm mostly playing Elite so I don't have that problem right now.
But I know your situation. I've made long pauses in Elite.

It's because I'm having a love-hate relationship with Elite. The simulation aspect, the perfect immersion with VR in Elite is what makes me play this game. But the gameplay as such is relatively grindy, repetitive and shallow and there isn't enough of an in-game multiplayer community in it to distract from it.

So the immersion always makes me come back to this game. And after a while I always get to the point of "Well, it's nice, but what do I do now?"

I play two accounts on Vive and my third is for exploration on monitor. I need to be able to type in GalMap, use Sysmap to lock onto stars/planets/moons, etc. and it's just too darned inconvenient on the Vive.

I`ve stopped playing games on monitor/TV completely. Only VR for me, just cant go back to looking at a screen instead of being inside the games

ED is a game that can very much monopolize your time. When I started playing back in beta, I could sit at my PC (screen) and play all day. I have an embarrassing number of weeks of play time!

Taking a few extended breaks was IMO a very healthy thing to do. :)

I do however like the opportunity to fly spaceships, and flying them now with a rift is surely the most wonderful way to be able to do it. Could I have really imagined this experience back in the days I played Frontier : Elite II?

So now I fly my spaceships in VR, typically for a few hours at a time, and it's great, and when I stop and do other things, I don't worry too much, as ED and my spaceships (and my rift) will be there the next time i want to jump into the pilot's seat.

Pretty much agree with most of the comments in this thread. Also taking a break from ED ATM, mainly so I don't get jaded, but also wanted to wait before hitting 2.4 to let FD iron out the kinks which inevitably seem to follow with large updates.

No playing on a monitor for over a year now... i exclusively play Elite Dangerous and Project CARS, just interrupted by testing a few new VR demos and free titles. Elite is the game of games for me... definitely.

I have so many great titles to play in VR now that some days I just can't decide what to play. I slipped into Alien Isolation the other day in non-VR to do a quick tweak and accidently saw the game in 2D. Won't do that again. (shudders!)

I feel I can pretty freely switch between VR and 2D now.

I'm on a break from ED, but with a lifetime pass, I can come back at any time.
Currently Ark: Survival Evolved has me pretty firmly in 2D. And Warframe. And Star Citizen.

But I'm loving Lone Echo and still playing Lucky's Tale in VR. And Robo Recall for light-hearted fun.

Both have their advantages - I guess this will become a bit less polarised once VR up the resolution and closes on the sharpness monitors can display.

have put a lot of effort into building a cockpit, have rift/kicker, pretty darn immersive. Yet, I find myself out of vr at times, playing elite even.

the main reason is some things are just a pain in vr, mainly 1. driving srv 2. galaxy map 3. looking up out of game info. 2 and 3 maybe I could fix/work around, but even with some vr friendly settings the srv just makes me sick.

Galmap is easily sorted by mapping the binds to your HOTAS or game pad. SRV is a little more tricky as it depends on how badly you get affected by motion sickness. You should be able to build up some resistance to the problem through prolonged exposure, ensuring you stop or take break every time you start to feel ill. You wont get those VR legs playing on a monitor thats for sure though. I have never felt the need to view third party sites for info while playing but there are workarounds such as V Dashboard, OVRDrop or alt tabbing to virtual desktop via a macro.
