I have to admit - I see now the benefit of open gameplay

Let me make one thing clear: I still want offline mode. I am every time set back when I lose connection or when something goes awry (or there is a server update or whatever).

But, as it is, yesterday I thought well, it's christmas and why should I not try open play for once. I mean, I have been forced into online, why not try it for once. I was determined to switch back instantly when I get annoyed.

Matter of fact, I didn't meet anyone. Granted, it's been christmas and the middle of the night (on the other hand, when else could you play these days anyways).

Until - I jumped in the only tech system known to me in the vicinity.

"Greetings, Commander". That was all.
Awesome! I was struggling to response, but somehow, when I finally managed open comms while trying to not spin into the star, I hit "Voice Chat" or something similar and could neither get out of it nor open anything else. I tried. I scanned all the ships to find the Commander in question, but to no avail.

So. Salutations Commander Isbeorn, I think I'll play open play some more.

(But I still want offline for my gaming notebook at work)

I've been playing since premium beta and not been "griefed" once. I did get rather rudely butt rammed by a CMDR in a cobra while I was entering a station. I played Solo for a lot of the Beta phase as I found open a little unstable entering/exiting frameshift but been playing open since gamma and will continue to do so. I think 95% of us are just good guys who wanna enjoy the game. Lot of love in this room ;-)

Im an ardent defender of you solo chaps keeping the ability to move at will even though I only play open, your post explains why it works. I love open because the rush you get when you see that hollow rectangle. Elite for me has captured a hint of what early DayZ had where no one unknown was to be trusted. All you have is you, your ship and its guns and somewhere theres someone with more of them than you have. I loved that in DayZ and I love that in Elite.

I did spend a couple of hours in open when there was that prob with connection at the end of gamma and it was ok. I go for solo really without even thinking about it these days but perhaps need to be a tad more adventurous. Im never going to be a threat to anyone as i travel unarmed and the docking thing might be a pain. But im generally out in the wilds so probably wont meet anyone anyway. Praps a new year resolution!
