I have to admit that raw materials gathering is so much better now...

The activity I used to hate most was surface prospecting in the SRV. Driving around monitoring that convoluted anachronism of a wave scanner and shooting rocks was the worst.

Yesterday, I used INARA to find a planet with volcanism that had the material I wanted. I had done this in the past but it was a miserable experience because the geysers were on a steep valley in a low G world. This time it was a nice mostly flat surface. The geysers spewing green smoke, among other reddish smoldering geysers with a ringed gas giant in the background looked beautiful. My job was straightforward, I drove around in the volcanic region with geysers while shooting various crystals from these geysers and collecting raw materials. I felt almost guaranteed to find some G4 materials I could use to trade for whatever I wanted.

I didn't find any of the Nickel I needed but I was easily able to trade down and get plenty of Nickel.

Now I finally have a complete system for getting all the materials I need gradually.

1. Missions rewards (manufactured and encoded)
2. Hacking installations (encoded)
3. Haz Res and Combat Zone destroyed ships (manufactured) [you also get encoded data just scanning ships]
4. SRV volcanism prospecting (raw)

Two out of every three play sessions, I just play as I like collecting mission rewards and materials at combat and haz res sites. One out of every three play sessions I try to make progress towards whatever engineering goals I have. Maybe I'll travel to an engineer or do some SRV volcanism and installation hacking.

Ideally, I wish I could spend all three sessions just playing as I want but at least things are better than they were in the past.

Any suggestions for making the whole engineering process more enjoyable would be appreciated.
