I Haz Dumb(TM) Question

You can buy some (cheap) software called "Voice Attack" that uses speech recognition to perform keystrokes.

People use this to aid them when flying in ED.

Voice packs simply change the computer voice that responds to you in VA. (Rather than the default voice you can have someone famous saying "Yes Commander" as they recognise you want to lower your landing pads and press the correct key for you)

Great example of voice attack here. As above you can use certain pre-programmed voice commands to get certain results.
In this case the CMDR or voice pack creator has done some serious effort to involve wikipedia notes being read aloud etc.

In general it's used to activate certain things like landing gear, boost etc but can be used as an "extra hand" for things like pips as demonstrated here.

Voice packs on the other hand simply change the in-game voice to different people (afaik).

You need Voice Attack and the Voicepacks alter that voice, not the ED in game voice. She's still there and most likely will be muted via the options menu.

Ah thanks, I've been looking into full voice attack and packs etc but haven't taken the plunge yet. I think I'm going to do it the same time I get VR to accommodate for the loss of a few functions i've mapped to Keyboard to avoid accidental press (cargo scoop, landing gear etc).

Thanks guys. One other question. I'm assuming VA is a premium product. How much are we looking at?

Voice Attack - US $10

(Voicepacks not required for it to work)

I haven't taken the plunge either.

EDIT:
"The trial version of VoiceAttack gives you one profile with twenty commands. It allows you to preview VoiceAttack for 21 days. After that, you will need to purchase a registration key"

Oh that's not too bad. I assume it works with any microphone?

(Sorry for the questions, but research is research. :D)

Yes, but a poor mic will give poor results and you have to train the Windows Voice Rec to listen to your voice. It's great when you spend the time with it.

You can also set up your own replies with the Windows Text to speech but it isn't a s cool as some famous Sci-Fi actor speaking back to you.
