I intend to buy a Virtual Reality System. Any recommendations?

Hi, brothers in Space I tried to post this thread in the correct forum section, but the forum software refuses me to do so, and i don't know why. Edit: in the meantime, I recognized, that the post had to be manually "authorized" by a forum moderator. I would like to buy a Virual Reality Device for Elite Dangerous. My System: Windows 8.1 CPU = Intel Core i5-4670K @ 3.40 GHz RAM = 8 GB Graphics = NVidia GeForce GTX 760 (2 GB RAM) I would like to prefer a system with headtracking, but I've got no idea which one is the "best" to use with Elite Dangerous in these days. May you give me some recommendations, and tell me, why I should buy this, and not another system? Which one is the most practicable one, and is most compatible with Elite? What is the price of your recommendation, or, to make it short: With which system, do you think, I will have the most fun with out there in Space? Thank you in advance for your answers. Live long and fly prosper...

Believe it or not.. the only PC gaming VR system you can actually own right now is the Oculus Rift, but that isn't available in consumer form. You can purchase the DK2 (development kit 2) and you can play ED with it, but the consumer kit is out next year.

You would be better off waiting for the consumer kit. It'll be superior to the DK2 and far less of annoying to set up.

Other VR solutions aren't officially supported yet unless I've missed something.

DK2 is not difficult to setup , takes around 15 mins. I wouldn't use a GTX760 tho, I gave my DK2 to a friend while I'm on this business trip, he has a GTX770 and gets 75FPS in space but it dips to 65 in stations.

Definitely get a DK2 if you have the money to burn, no comparison to TIR or 2D screens.

Ideally you want to be rocking at least a GTX970, personally I say go for the 980TI if money's not an issue. When you upgrade to the CV1, keep the DK2 as a collectors item.

Just remember that the DK2 is specifically aimed at developers (according to Oculus) so vendors like Frontier have no specific requirement to support them going forward and they will probably drop support if it becomes to much of an overhead. It isn't a consumer device and you are taking that risk in purchasing it. For the sake of a few months, the consumer version is going to have a longer shelf life.

What I mean by '"less annoying to set up" is that the consumer kit should be slightly more plug & play in terms of number of leads/power adapter/drivers. It also looks more ergonomic as it works more like a baseball cap than a pair of ski goggles.

I should know, I have my DK1 gathering dust right here :)

The Oculus Rift is great! As posted above it is currently only available in developer kit form, but the consumer version is due out early next year.

As few points to note, is that the resolution of VR is generally pretty low, although that should get better when they are officially released.

A GTX 760 may not be powerful enough. VR systems need very high frame rates, other wise you get juddering and motion sickness. The Oculus Rift DK2 needs a constant frame rate of 75fps, whilst the consumer version will need a constant frame rate of 90fps, which is significantly more than a monitor.

But as for immersion and having fun, there really is nothing else like it! It's the best bit of computer equipment I have ever purchased.

I've got a Rift and it's awesome but in my experience you ideally need to supersample to make it usable all the time (it makes a big difference to text readability) so you need a seriously beefy PC to do it. I'm basically super sampling to 1440p and it's a good balance but that's as high as I can go and that's with an overclocked i7 and 970GTX, with fairly middling to good graphics quality settings.

"Any recommendations?"

Wait.

That is purely dependent on the OP's bank balance. Why wait if you have money to burn? CV1 won't be out for another 7 to 8 months. The TV I bought to run this silly Xbox cost 4 times what I spent on my DK2, the experience I get from ED is not even remotely close to what I get from my DK2 rig back home.

350 quid to be inside the simulation in VR. But sure, if the OP is on a tight budget and can't upgrade the GPU, definitely wait.

Thanks for your opinions so far

Well, it sounds like I have to feed my piggybank until next year, to get a new computer, or to
make an upgrade of my CPU and a new Graphics Card.

I'm not someone, who you may call a Nerd, and no, ... >sigh< ..., i have not the money to burn it for a DK2.

But maybe your answers in this tread may help others to consider, too, and your words belonging to this
Topic are not for the "void", I think ...

Yes, very interresting, not only for me:

1. Any idea how big the whole will be, that the costumer version will burn into my wallet?
2. Another point of interrest for me are the recommended system requirements to run this CV1
smoothly enough to allow more ore less normal gameplay, inclusive fighting and so on...

Well, as far I can see it by myself...
roundabout
400 for a new CPU,
400 for an adequate graphics card, and
400 maybe for the CV1, i guess...

So I will lay down myself in my bedroom for the night, and maybe you can hear my sobbings...

Wait? Serious? Look, the customer version is due out early next year which means middle to late next day. Then add 3 months before stock catches up to demand. Then a couple more for Oculus to fix whatever defects appeared in this release. You're realistically going to be waiting until the end of next year.

The dk2 is only 350, it's not that hard to setup and ED on it is seriously amazing. I say go for it.

Well I'm going to wait. I would prefer the hardware and software to be more mature. Whilst I expect some defects, hopefully they will be minor. You may have a valid point about the stock. Given that the HTC HMD is due for release in December Oculus/FB will be under pressure to release and I think they'll want to get it on shelves in Feb/Mar. And there is another reason to wait - perhaps by then there will be 3 HMDs on the market and hopefully the competition combined with demand will push the prices down.
