I intend to buy a Virtual Reality System. Which one would you recommend, and why?

Um, because they're expensive, and I have a mortgage and 2 kids? :)

I understand your position; I also have 2 kids and a mortgage, and money is tight.......... so, I decided to quit drinking on weeknights.

I never got drunk on weeknights, but I did consume 2 glasses of wine every night.
So, if 2 glasses of wine is a half a bottle, and if a bottle costs $10, then that's $5 per night. Therefore, in 4 months I'll have saved $400. (Vive)
Then 4 months after that I'll have saved another $400 (Oculus).

............ also, its better for my wasteline.

Cheers!

What makes you think Steam will not do the same thing? (if they dont then that is great, but if I were valve I would be v tempted to spend FAR more time getting HL3 working in Vive over CV1)

also it isnt really only down to valve or oculus I suppose, if a dev wants to only support 1 HMD. I just hope the behind the scences stuff is so similar that it is easy for get both to be supported, even if it takes a spot of jury rigging
If this scenario is going to happen then I would assume the Vive would be far more popular.
If OC think they can compete with steam with their Oculus home overlay they're crazy.

Especially after the fiasko about the facebook overtake of what used to be a kickstarter company.

Im not a "supporter" of any VR atm, I'll propably buy the first one that gets a full release and gets decent reviews after that.

My reply is what UBERPEITSCHE said. Oculus would be crazy to take on the juggernaut that's Steam, worse still because they are coming to the party late. I'd like to point out that I'm not a big fan of Steam. I don't like the power they have in the market, but trying to force people to buy your products through exclusivity deals sounds more of an idea that men in suits would come up with. It sounds very FaceBook.

I can't wait for VR; just looking around the cockpit with my mouse is awesome enough, but being able to look around the ship with my head...? That'll look really nifty.

The only issue I have with the concept is that, unless there is some way to see your keyboard, if I have to take my hands off of it and then put them back down, and I happen to come down one or two keys off, how do I reorient them if my eyes are covered by a VR helmet...?
I've been wondering about that for ages, now.

A HOTAS is much more suited to VR in Elite than keyboard, but you may find it helpful to mark your keyboard with a easy to grab and not ouchy object - a blob of blutak or something, then you can touch type from a known position.

just to add to the mix......

it seems Nokia are boarding the VR hype train.

So that confirms my view even more that all these HMDs must end up working to an industry standard otherwise there will be a hell of a fragmented market!

Note this is not the division of Nokia which was bought out by Microsoft so I am interested to see how much might they really have to put behind it....... I dunno if enyone remembers the NGage? that was a bit of a damp squib!
