I just figured out why the scanner annoys me so much

It should be level!

Right now the scanner is tilted, but the lines that drop down to show the target go straight down instead of orthogonal to the scanner. This causes a bit of mental discordance when viewing the scanner.

If the scanner were level the the cmdr's point of view then the lines going straight down would make sense.

But because the scanner is tilted about 15 to 20 degrees with the lines not being orthogonal, it causes confusion in perception. If the scanner is to be tilted, then the lines leading to the target should be orthogonal and not pointing straight down.

What do you guys think?

Or, and a translucent sphere enclosing the scanner wouldn't hurt either.

I'm fine with it. If I want a different angle from the scanner , I'll just fly further out vertically from the general orbital plane.

This is not one of those .... "once you've seen it, you can't unsee it" things is it ? In which case I shall look away before I understand what we should be looking at. :(

I get what the OP's saying but I suspect if it was "correct" it'd just create more confusion when attempting to estimate the positions of objects above/below the scanner's plane.
It'd seem particularly odd (and obtuse) as you pitch up/down and a couple of objects would go from being "wide apart" when they were above you to, at worst, merging together when they were below you.

*EDIT*

On a related note, I always find it strange that you buy a sensor module to make your scanner work.
Would it not have been more straightforward to name the sensor module as a "scanner" module instead?

Not for me, nor most other people, I'd imagine.

The scanner has to be viewed from an angle to deliver relevant positional data on a 2D screen. If it were level with the CMDR's PoV, it would be almost useless.

I think the point is more that if the scanner "base" is angled, the vertical lines protruding from it should be slightly diagonal rather than perfectly vertical - so they'd look like something you were looking down on from above.

I don't think this would improve it's functionality.

The scanner that we’ve had since 1984? I’ve never had a problem with it, and it looks even better in VR :)
