I just hate it when planes fly over and my radio picks up the safety demonstrations

I remember when CB radio was a thing in the UK . Everyone in my street had one then it kinda stopped. Still then the web was invented..

I agree, but I get why they did it. What would make more sense is if there was chatter with starports and cities, you know like:

Sirius Star Lines: Galileo Starport, this is Beluga 779 Heavy, I have a disruptive passenger and will need emergency clearance and security services ready on arrival.

Galileo Starport: Beluga 779 Heavy, acknowledged, police have been informed, emergency docking clearance request registered, docking pad will be available on your arrival. What is your ETA?

Sirius Star Lines: Currently 120 light seconds out, direct approach.

Galileo Starport: Copy, we'll be ready for you. Galileo traffic control out.

I Like the idea ..... But

Radio waves propagate at the speed of light . Almost all of us approach in supercruse faster than that. Your Beluga 779 Heavy would arrive before it's radio message.:x

What you guys all don't realize is that the answer is very simple: They're on VOX without noticing it.

My theory on that is that, we, as Pilot's Federation members (aka space illuminati) get access to a lot of very exclusive (ejector seat) but not necessarily legal equipment. For example, a device able to listen on comms from ships (see Anaconda cockpit thingy with exposed cables) that you shouldn't be able to receive.

A few examples:
_Dude on the galphone in a wedding barge calls his friend panicking, "I haven't even wrote my vows yet".
_Cruise liner broadcasting to its passengers "and remember that this vessel is in the top 1% of cruise liners"
_Classified military convoy comms between themselves about their secret cargo is eating through their subsystems.
_Pirate muttering to himself in his cockpit "I didn't expect this"
_Search and rescue ships messaging back to base about the state of the wreckage.

Etc. Etc.

I like this explanation, but "Local" is a poor label for all these comms when it's the same label given to our open comms that go to all ships in the area. It would make more sense if these NPC messages were tagged something like "Intercept." These and the type from NPC bounty hunters where they send you a [DIRECT] message saying "Closing in on high value target."

True, I'm sure someone has geeked this out, but we obviously communicate in supercruise (faster than light) and there's some mechanism for ship-ship communication despite the fact that we're going faster than radio waves. What ever the medium of propagation (entanglement? that's all the rage in nerdom, I prefer a more steampunk cliche and reintroduce the idea of "Ether" for faster than light comms) it exists in game so we don't need to bother ourselves with petty constraints of our current understanding of physical reality.

As a matter of fact, I may start to evoke "Ether" in more of my ED discussions:

JoeBlow: So, how could you even suggest such an immersion breaking idea, it's preposterous!

Me: But, ETHER!

JoeBlow: Your a blithering idiot, I'm blocking you!

Me: Haha! Ether wins again!
