I just need to proselytize about VR for a moment.

I can't speak for the Rift as I've only demoed it briefly, but I got the Vive because of its potential. Aside from the obvious perks of room scale and included controllers, there is already quite the demand for third party accessories (new straps, face cushions, cords, etc.)

A lot of the stuff that turned me off the Rift was how proprietary everything is, as well as the Oculus store. I can't say which is better though, because I'm clearly biased.

I find the CV1 much more comfortable in long-term sessions, and it has a noticeably less obtrusive screen door effect. Considerably more god-rays though, which can be fairly distracting at times. The CV1 had more issues with colors not "popping" at first, but I found graphics tweaks had more noticeable and favorable changes in the end than I was able to achieve in the Vive. This could and may well be unique to my setup though. Currently don't use the Vive at all anymore for ED, as I wasn't able to get rid of the jagged edges and artifacts as thoroughly. Longterm, as additional camera sensors can be introduced to increase it's play field, I will likely use the CV1 for most VR as it's compatible with steamVR. The Vive front camera is too limiting and I end up hitting my filing cabinet anyway as it doesn't help me notice things in my peripherals, so that's not really a consideration for me. I just hope the CV1 controllers are better quality, as my Vive controllers are already showing signs they won't last more than a year.

I love the idea of walking around inside the ship. I am going to get a VR unit sometime soon but which one?! Which works best with Elite?

I've now had the opportunity to experience both the Vive and the Rift.

I've been using the Vive for about a month and it's been great. Sure, there is that horrible resolution issue, tons of jaggies, poor supersampling capabilities, terrible optimization ... but through all that, E:D's VR capabilities shine.

Then I used the Rift.

Holy hell, what an experience.

Resolution = amazing

Jaggies = gone

Supersampling = 2.0 (980ti) no problemo

Optimization = smooth as butter, even at SS2.0

In short, if you are ONLY playing Elite, Rift is the way to go.

HOWEVER, big caveat here: Vive beats Rift hands-down on pretty much everything else.

Just my two cents.

I would really appreciate to hear something from FDev that touches on the rendering bug. Anything but the radio silence we've been getting. Thankfully, I'm lucky enough not to have an Oculus to compare things to; so my experience hasn't been tainted by greener grass.

But for real, get on it FDev. At times I feel like I'm playing on 720p.

I may give up on Elite until they get the Vive graphics on a par with the Rift. There, that should do it :)

Is there any word on a fix for the Vive? I'm still on the DK2, won't have my CV1 till summer. Plan was to get a Vive for guests using multi crew. It would be a shame to have to get two CV1's, I like the sound of the Vive for other VR titles.

Yeah. Well.

I think the Razor OSVR might be just what I'm looking for. Cheap VR that doesn't need a massive PC to work.

True. It's not a patch on the Vive, but it's just a bit cheaper and predicated on people having mid-range hardware, not top drawer stuff like the vive and rift are.

I really hope they see it as a bug too... I'm starting to think that the bad quality in Vive is becoming a feature :(
But anyway, I'd love to read some feedback from FD too.

Leaving that aside... it's still amazing. The improvement in gameplay is SO big that I'm absolutely convinced that I cannot go back to a standard display. I feel the fights are so much easier now, even with the improved AI.

Can't tell you how many times I've craned my head forward and twisted my face upwards to look beyond the edge of the canopy in my Viper Mk. to track an opponent and adjust pips/rotation/speed according to what I observe.
