I just noticed...

On coriolis.io, it says the Detailed Surface Scanner has a range of 0.33 ls
I thought it had the same proximity scanning range as whatever Discovery Scanner you had fitted.
Does this mean that all of those ELWs I scanned from like 30 ls away, and all those black holes & Neutron stars I scanned from 2 ls away only have a level 2 scan against them? :O
Can anyone (especially from FD) confirm or deny?
Must try this out when I get home. If the scanning thingy starts spinning again at 0.33 ls and I get another "scan completed" notice, I'll be gutted.

I don't think so. Scanned is scanned. When you have the DSS, the message tells you that you've got detailed info (whatever it says) and that's it. Pretty sure at least.

I concur. The scanner will only start scanning when it is in range.

Yup, as long as you get the message saying the scan has complete then it's done. You can check as you go by looking at the system map which tells you if you have scanned each planet.

Long ago I did a test to see what exactly the DSS did.
Performed on a few bodies, but for this discussion the gas giant with rings is pertinent. Turned off DSS, scanned the body from far away, as gas giants can be scanned from pretty far (over 800LS). Very little info appeared, and no info about the rings appeared.
I reactivated the DSS and from the same distance, the ADS activated again.
At the end of the scan, the text appeared regarding the scan, and more info was in the sidebar, including all info on rings.
TL;DR, don't worry, the DSS description is incorrect.

Its probably refering to some base scan range the surface scan always uses, actual range probably being base range * body mass.
