The other day I met up with a Cmdr and joined together in a wing. Had a blast flying with him and learned some new concepts as well as a new perspective on "flying" in a crowd.
During the course of this, we got into a chat about the game, this and that, etc. and the topic came up about time spent and credits earned. After I revealed how long I have been playing and how many credits I have earned, the other Cmdr said that if I stick with him, I will increase my credit balance at a (much) increased rate when compared to how much I have earned.
Now, I am always glad when I am given advice about flight mechanics, mission strategies, etc. And I will be following ALL the advice I got from him. I was really surprised how much I had not considered about strategizing during the time I have been "experiencing" (I prefer that term instead of "playing") Elite Dangerous. And I am grateful to come across a Cmdr willing to share his success and ideas instead of just sharing plasma bolts with me.
That said, I don't see myself changing my overall outlook on Elite Dangerous. The only thing I role play is myself in the future. If others want to RP other characters, great. If others want to measure their success by how many credits they have gained, ships they have acquired, miles on their ships odometer, planets discovered, cool.
I just want to imagine I have been transported into the future, given a ship and told, "Go out there and check out how things are in the future." My personality, physical make up, social status and (most importantly to me) my principles are the same as the person sitting behind the keyboard/Hotas.
It might be boring to some, a missed opportunity to others, but it is how I "experience" ED.
And, in whatever manner others choose, I wish them the best in finding their "experience" highly enjoyable.
That's it.
I don't want to try and change anyone's mind on how they roll in ED. If anything, I just want to suggest that for those who just want to be themselves or have a "Walter Mitty" experience, that's as valid a playstyle as any other.
