I just want to experience the game.

The other day I met up with a Cmdr and joined together in a wing. Had a blast flying with him and learned some new concepts as well as a new perspective on "flying" in a crowd.

During the course of this, we got into a chat about the game, this and that, etc. and the topic came up about time spent and credits earned. After I revealed how long I have been playing and how many credits I have earned, the other Cmdr said that if I stick with him, I will increase my credit balance at a (much) increased rate when compared to how much I have earned.

Now, I am always glad when I am given advice about flight mechanics, mission strategies, etc. And I will be following ALL the advice I got from him. I was really surprised how much I had not considered about strategizing during the time I have been "experiencing" (I prefer that term instead of "playing") Elite Dangerous. And I am grateful to come across a Cmdr willing to share his success and ideas instead of just sharing plasma bolts with me. :p

That said, I don't see myself changing my overall outlook on Elite Dangerous. The only thing I role play is myself in the future. If others want to RP other characters, great. If others want to measure their success by how many credits they have gained, ships they have acquired, miles on their ships odometer, planets discovered, cool.

I just want to imagine I have been transported into the future, given a ship and told, "Go out there and check out how things are in the future." My personality, physical make up, social status and (most importantly to me) my principles are the same as the person sitting behind the keyboard/Hotas.

It might be boring to some, a missed opportunity to others, but it is how I "experience" ED.

And, in whatever manner others choose, I wish them the best in finding their "experience" highly enjoyable.

That's it.

I don't want to try and change anyone's mind on how they roll in ED. If anything, I just want to suggest that for those who just want to be themselves or have a "Walter Mitty" experience, that's as valid a playstyle as any other.

if you play/experience the game your own way and enjoy is, you are obviously doing it wrong :D
When I first got involved with ED, the wife would walk in the room (after coming up for air from one of her marathon Facebook sessions ;) ) and exclaim:

Are you STILL playing that game?!?!?!? What is so fascinating about it?!?!?!?

Now, bear in mind, it has been MANY years since I have been "playing" a computer game. I forgot just how engrossed I get when it comes to them. And ED has been as addictive as ANY game I have ever played.

We have since come to an understanding about each other's online experience.

But yeah, your post brought back that memory. :)

Agreed, I could pretty easily be triple elite by now if that had been my goal. It's not so I'm not. On the other hand I bet I've fiddled with more of the hidden aspects of ED than many Triple Es.

BLARGH! I have failed! I need to buy another account, and start playing in a way that is grindy and boring, so I too, can experience what the grinding folk feel...

Z...

I am not sure if I would be Elite anything (even) if I would have tried.

But yeah, I will take "feeling" over "ranking" when it comes to ED.... [up]

Personally I'm all about the experience too. My credits / hour is terrible. I spent many hours in the SRV prospecting all 14 available moons in myself adopted home system just so I could know what materials were there, should I ever need them, and so I could better get to know my home. Even with the legal salvage and data I gathered the rate of pay was dreadful. Sometimes I'll get a bit grindy for a community goal or to get a new permit but mostly I'll just do whatever takes my fancy at the time. I often find myself flying in ships who's insurance I could cover many hundred times over just because it's the ship want to fly today.

I respect the goal oriented commanders making mega bucks and always aiming for bigger and better. They are the ones pushing the envelope on understanding how the game works and that benefits us all. But, enjoying the journey in your own way is the key to getting the most out of this game. There is no right way but your own.

Good point. The advice I got (and use now) was the result of another Cmdr pushing said envelope....
