I just wanted to give the devs a shout-out on how brilliant the orrerry map!

I was one of those people nagging on the forums wanting to have a 3D maps. Then it finally came...I was very happy....but just had no use case for it. I felt a bit stupid until now.
For quite some time exploring I didn't come across a system with more than one interesting planet to map - however lately I had several systems with a few water-worlds, earth-likes and so on - and here the 3D map comes in just sooooo handy.

Now it is possible to plan the shortest route from one to the next planet! Also I gives you quite a good understanding of the distances and proportions of a system.
I know, that there are some threads on how the map looks too basic, but I think it is exactly how it should be: Easy to use, informative and fast.

For me it represents a good example of a gaming community wanting a (reasonable) feature and the developers listening and implementing it! Perfect!

Cheers!

It's a bit too basic to be of much use for me at the moment.

When they add all of the entries that appear in you nav panel with the same filtering options that's when I think it'll start to be useful. It would tie it into the FSS even more as you scan signal sources and whatnot they should populate into the orrery, giving you a sense of building a bigger picture of what is going on, and where, in a particular system.

I too like the simple presentation keeping in the style of the galaxy map and also having the same color coding as the FSS. I really hope they do more with it.

Regarding OP, I use it for the same thing when exploring and I need to map several worlds. Helps find the best/shortest route for hitting them all.

Never used it TBH.

I recall, back when I first started playing, and couldn't afford an ADS, I used to follow the orbit-lines of the planets I had discovered, honking periodically as I went, in order to locate more distant planets in a system.

I kind of wish the Orrery was more useful in that regard, somehow.

I fly with orbit lines on so have no need for it. It has been integrated unobtrusively, I'm glad it doesn't detract from the existing sysmap.

Also I love to watch a gas giant's rings rise over the horizon from the surface of one of its moons, for that the orrery offers a nice graphical way of finding which would be the best candidate.
That's been the key use case for me. If I'm scanning a WW, ELW or other notable body I tend to do the whole system, all or nothing. Experience of the FSS helps in building up a mental picture of what a gas giant and its moons might look like as you're doing the scanning, and the completed System Map helps to confirm some of those suspicions up to a point, but only the Orrery can present it in a way that's immediately obvious. Moons that are very close to the edges of planetary rings, or in an eccentric or inclined orbit, are trivial to confirm on the Orrery. It complements the FSS perfectly.
