I keep losing interdictions

I'm trying to interdict commanders with my Sidewinder's unengineered 2A FSD interdictor, but I'm not having much success. I thought I would have a good chance against battleships, but even they are managing to escape. I'm using twin sticks that I'm still getting used to, and it's not easy to keep the throttle in any position because it's centralised on a spring. Is that the problem or is it just that it's nearly impossible to interdict commanders these days? I always win against NPCs.

Anybody got any suggestions for how I can improve my chances? Is there any engineering that can help?

Throttle is a problem. From my experience your speed has an effect on how quickly you gain "bars".

You would think that since the mechanics of interdiction seem to rely on maneuverability that we'd be better off to ride in the sweet spot so we spend more time on target, but I've had much better luck just doing as well as I can while keeping throttle at max.

Never understood the interdiction minigame mechanics (and I'm a mini-games addict !!!!), so I just decided to ignore them alltogether : submit > highwake > give them the middle finder and basta. :D

Ship mass mismatch is likely one of your problems. Basically, you need a larger ship and the highest rated A class interdictor module you can buy. It also helps a great deal if the ship you choose for your interdiction platform has a VERY HIGH turn rate in SuperCruise. (Higher/Faster than the ships you are attempting to bring down)

Why would you want to interdict anything in a sidey? Looking for rebuys? Sideys blow up even if you weapons miss :)

Hey! No disrespecting the ol' rusty bucket! You can pulls some nice stunts with it. Now where was that video of some commander doing exactly that I've seen a while ago on that topic....

This vid again made me want to engineer the crap out of my own Sidey :D

It shouldn't be a problem. I regularly interdict player ships of all sizes in my adder with a 2A FSD Interdictor. I'm using dual sticks and pedals. As soon as it starts, I put my throttle to zero because I'll be using fwd/rev thrust in normal space, so throttle shouldn't matter either. The only time I have issues is when the network connection seems laggy.

A sidewinder is a very capable ship. It's almost impossible to shoot because it's so fast and small. I've been all evening at the CG chasing away all the wanted commanders in FDLs, FASs, Corvettes and Cutters. I've even had them combat log on me. The ship is like ammo. If it gets blown up, you just go and get another one at about the same cost as the ammo used by the guy that shot me. I interdict them, then see how many passes I can make before flying away. I only got blown up twice tonight, but must have done about 50 interdictions. These are Elite PvP commanders. I guess this is very annoying for them, but when I ask them to leave, they say, "make me", so I do. Some of the commanders I asked to leave complied. Maybe they thought it was a trap. It is, sort of.

You don't need a fully-engineered Corvette or FDL to have fun or even to survive in PvP

Is that commanders or NPCs, because I don't have trouble with NPCs?

@OP: you're using joysticks, that's your problem. A mouse will always be more accurate than a joystick for the kind of micro-movements needed during the interdiction minigame. The majority of the playerbase certainly uses mouse and keyboard, so you'll always be at a disadvantage there.

IIRC ship mass mismatch works the other way around? Heavier ships have a harder time interdicting smaller ships. This was added back in 2016-ish to help reduce ganking against newbies.

Basically, you need a larger ship and the highest rated A class interdictor module you can buy.

A dev once confirmed the size/rating of the FSDI only impacts the range (expressed in closure rate in seconds in the outfitting screen), not how good it is at interdicting.

Also in three years of playing and using FSDIs, I've seen no evidence that the throttle position or your speed has any effect on the outcome, but admittedly I haven't done rigorous tests either.

In my group, we routinely play "Interdiction Tag", a very simple little game - wing up and take turns trying to interdict each other. It helps you develop skills on both sides of the interdiction - both escaping and capturing, and it's fun and pretty cheap - just some minor repairs now and then.

git... guuuu...

ahh I cant say that. :)

I have found appropriate use of yaw to be of benefit in winning the interdiction battle.

Does the throttle actually play any part in the interdiction process? Or is it just confirmation bias? I really can't tell

(I mean, other than 0 to submit, before anyone points it out)
