ME 
I actually killed an NPC in open !!!!
Ok it took me half an hour and cost nearly 1000 credits in ammo but I actually won a battle with an NPC and for me that is going some.
For all those who are not perfectly happy with the game I wish you all could just go back to the original pure thrill of your first victory in some sort of game. I dont do shooter games - or any sort of console action games in general - I am 40 and female and gaming just is not natural to me (although I do give my sons and their friends huge amounts of fun when they hand me GTA5 when I am drunk). The only game that ever caught my imagination in any way was Elite - and I dreamed of it being available in modern form.
I started out nice and quiet just trading a bit and exploring a bit and just generally happy to be flying about in space doing not very much. I was able to get myself a cobra without much hassle and start doing it up as explorer/trader. I found I was evading interdiction easily enough before the update and still after the update and being able to escape the ones that did succeed in pulling me out of SC I decided to try my luck buying a viper and fighting back.
I was/am horribly confused by all the different weapons etc but can afford a few credits learning. My first nose outside was greeted by an expert level NPC and I ended up splatted but started again and had a novice hit on me - and I actually won the battle (OK in a slow and painful way but I still won).
So to all newbies starting out and worried they are biting off more than they can chew dont stress - give yourself an easy intro by trading/exploring so you get used to how every thing works then have a crack at being more bad - cause if I can kill something so can you.
I just wanted to share the joy and excitement I get from the game - and politely ask my fellow CMDRs if they see me please go gentle as I under no illusions about standing a chance against a human.
