I'll have my next payment soon. I tried playing Elite today and I just got ed off. I think this game is causing me some stress owing to the emotional attachment I have.

So I'm taking a complete break from Elite for a while. Before I go though, I must ask, what flight games are there for me? With combat? Available on Steam preferably, and with multiplayer if possible.

Those are my only requirements, aside the aircraft featured must be real. I used to dominate flight combat games on Xbox 360. Whilst I know the console is nothing compared to what's on PC... I would say my brain is wired more for aircraft than space-faring vessels.

I want to put myself to the test.

System is a 960 4GB and i5 4690, 16GB DDR3. I have a keyboard and X52 for control input. Thanks for any recommendations.

Rise of Flight is free to play on Steam...excellent WWI combat flight sim.

From the same studio...IL2 Battle of Stalingrad...

Sims:
Modern flight simulator I can suggest is DCS - base game is free and offers a nice start in flight sims..
If you want something more retro as flight sim - rise of flight or Il2 series. Rise of Flight is also free in base version and is quite nice to get a step climb in the blue sky. Just don't get in from Steam since it has limitations later if you decide to purchase in game assets. Basically it's a generic rule - download free2play titles directly form the developer.

Il2 series are hardcore flight Sims (cliffs of Dover being the best and most complex imho). I don't recommend them to you if you are frustrated in general since they require lot of dedication and learning. Not kind of forgiving games..

If you' want to have a short brainwash with spaceship arenas you can try Dreadnought open beta.. ;) it's kind of world of warplanes wannabe meeting elite cqc ;)

Just see in YouTube those -maybe something will be appealing to you.

More arcade games you might like are those for example:

Like ace combat and so on..

Just see clips from actual gameplay to get an idea what is the experience offered. I haven't played them personally so cannot comment them.

I didn't know that about F2P titles, thanks.

You should definitely take a look at DCS flight sim. Demo version comes with pretty big Caucasus map and two free planes. The unarmed version of legendary WWII Mustang - the TF-51, and Russian twin-engine ground attack jet Su-25T.
The TF-51 comes with fully clickable/interactive cockpit - means you can move every button with your mouse.
The Su-25T does not have this feature but it comes with large variety of weapons.
I can safely say that both free planes (the TF-51 especially) are on pair with some pay-ware add-ons for other flightsims. The TF-51 model and flight dynamics are really amazing.
Demo DCS also includes powerful map editor - you can create your own missions, scenarios or even whole campaigns.

Rise of Flight looks particularly interesting, so I'll be giving it a go.

Yes, and learning is exactly what I want to do.

DCS - A-10C. All the buttons to press and they do (almost) all the stuff like in the real one. And you get a pretty plane, too. I can also recommend DCS - Ka 50. Russian cockpit optional! The Fishbed isn't bad either, never learned that last one fully, though.
And the F2P version features the Suchoi 25 T(ankovy) that can fit a buckload of Vikhr missiles, but good luck identifying targets. And it's not with clickable detailed cockpit, like the three above.
Playing the Ka-50 and Su 25, I sometimes wished for a multicrew version to cut down the workload. Identifying and targetting can really tie up awareness.

DCS of course (if you want true simulators, level of realism depends on the plane, can recommend A-10C and Ka-50 Black Shark II, but these cost extra). Prepare for 15mins ramp starts, lots of buttons and procedures. Unlike ED, successful landings can be a true challenge there ;)

And, as it was not mentioned before, you might want to have a look at War Thunder (https://warthunder.com) which is free to play and rooted in IL2, different levels of realism including "simulation mode". That one is the real thing as defined by IL2.

EDIT: If you got VR, Warthunder supports it automatically and it's absolutely great!

I got Rise of flight after someone on here recommended it. I even bought a few extra planes (they were on sale at the time, approx £1-£2 each I think) It's good. Quite challenging for someone rubbish like me :D

There is something charming and absolutely fascinating in those old propeller planes-keeping the energy, learning manoeuvres, relying on bare eyes and MGs from close distance...circling around with opponent is kind of a chess game who will get and keep the advantage, pushing machines to the limit.. You can't compare it with modern jet fighters, full of electronic, sensors and assisting goodies, where most of the time you don't even see the target [yesnod]

I've gone full on with RoF after playing the free to play a few years ago...Pat Wilson's campaign generator, definitely recommended... over 30 gigs of historical paint skins, hi-res terrain textures...all the aircraft, realism mods...everything I could find.
It brings back memories of Red Baron II for me. Even playing IL2 BoS, it doesn't have that feel of Rise of Flight.

A couple of screenies from my Royal Naval Air Service career pilot with the historical skins and PWCG... This pilot has so far survived into August 1917 from a career start of April 1916, I'm quite attached to him, lol...

For all beginner pilots: lots of useful videos to start with - follow irfc reqium channel:

https://youtu.be/m8vBp97auu0?list=PL469062277AEA72BF

And don't forget - everyone can learn a maneuver! The real skill is to do it at the right time, with true perfection and having all energy prerequisites met ;) Remember - always fly fast, fly aggressive and know when to separate. That is the true meaning of "flying safe", not what ED teaches you.
Salute and watch your 6!
