I Know I'm Not Allowed to Say This... But I Kinda Like the FSS

I never really knew how to use the Discovery scanner and FSS until I started getting out in the black and doing a little exploring.

Now, I find the pair are kind of an indispensable part of my tool kit.

I'm (still... ugh) grinding Fed rank and I take massacre missions to gather engineering mats and break up the tedium. Using the FSS to hunt target signal sources seems pretty efficient and makes me feel like I'm actually hunting my targets instead of just cruising around hoping a random contact spawns that happens to be a mission target.

I have mixed feelings, I enjoy using it and find combining it with the surface probes I feel like I'm really exploring a system.

However presently I'm on a distance run (22 kly) etc and need to scan systems for jumponium. My main gripe is that it takes quite a while to find out if a planet is actually landable because unless it is there's no point in investing time in scanning it.

Process:
  1. Honk system.
  2. Drive the scanner around finding your HMC worlds
  3. Scan said worlds
  4. Exit scanner.
  5. Enter system map, is it landable?
  6. No - , stop wasting my time!!!!!

What I'd like is something more like the old system where you could see landables straight up then you can decide whether or not to invest time in more detailed scanning.

I used to love it before I got my VR headset. NOW I understand why people wanted an in-cockpit solution. Being a spirit detached from my body and ship is.... weird. If it were the exact same interface but seen through a pop-up screen like the station menu (at least in VR), I would like it much more.

Wait, hang on. You "know you're not allowed to say" that you like the FSS? Have things changed that much then? For a long while, you weren't "allowed" to say that you dislike it instead, the pro-FSS fans would pounce on you if you said that it's bad.

I wasn't a fan of FSS until I started using Elite Observatory. Now it seems that skipping a full FSS scan feels like I may be losing some interesting finding or beautiful view.

I really like it for finding signal sources too. Scanning planets I find frustrating and waste of time. Orrery is cool.
