I like my Hauler

Yes, I know that it is a noob machine, and I know that it can be taken out with one shot by some massive space traveling ship-killer, but look at it in a business standpoint:

COSTS

Hauler - $55,000.00

Additions - $50,000.00 approximately

Annoyance fee from Serial Killers blowing me out of the sky (2 times) - $100,000.00

Insurance Payment - $23,000.00

TOTAL COST: Approximatley $228,000.00

REVENUE

Cargo Hauling, Mining, Exploration - $2,800.000.00

Relaxing Enjoyments sipping Clamato Bloody Marys while working on Elite Dangerous - Priceless

TOTAL PROFIT - $2,572,000.00

Not bad for a little noob machine. I will upgrade, sure, but not because I don't like my noob Hauler.

I am tempted, I've never flown the Hauler or the Adder.
Anyone else have owt ta say about their 'Cheap Rides' and the special place they reside in the hearts and minds of their owners ?

I did well or rather my Hauler did well for me till I moved up to a T-6 and now a Python. I may buy another one later but for now until I'm financially comfortable I'll stick with what I have.

Never had a Hauler but I do have an engineered Adder, love the fast little critter, great for gathering materials planetside.
I'm a ship hoarder so a Hauler would be a nice addition, don't know what internals to use though or where to use it for.
I like the way the Hauler looks though, better then the Adder.

I ran the hauler almost exclusively early on. It's a great little ship, versatile. But once I had the funds for a T6, I never went back. Still have one though, in some station or the other.

Even though I've never used them much outside of disposable taxi duty, it's a nice little ship.

..tell a lie, if you want a giggle - buy a hauler, don't upgrade it (at all), take it to into a cz, see how long you can hold out / how many kills you can rack up before you get stomped. It's crazy fun. Cash in all your vouchers etc first though..

Jumping from a starter Sidey to a shiny new hauler was one of the best feelings back then.

Cozy feeling cockpit, a little cargo space, awesome jump range. I was so proud of it.

Cant say I enjoyed mining in it all that much... it's almost better to just run missions from he board until you end up in a bigger ship.

I did take one to colonia, wasn't too bad of a trip.

With all these engineer mods, it's actually really fun to fly these days. It can outrun almost anything lol.

I originally went from sidey to viper to cobra III, so I skipped the hauler and adder. It wasn't until I spread out over the bubble that I started using the hauler as a taxi. I started to like flying around and doing random courier missions and small rare trading with it. It sounds great and was a lot of fun to fly.

The adder though, while I still own one, will do nothing but collect dust. I just don't like the view from the flight deck at all. But if we ever need to load a ship with explosives to die with honor in the face of the Thargoid invasion, my kamikadder will be ready.

Still like my Adder

For me the Adder was the first upgrade from the 'winder. Since it was the first ship that I earned and bought (the 'winder was gifted to me by Frontier) it occupies a special place in my heart. I see similar affection for the Hauler for similar reasons from other commanders here.

I kept it and still have used it for a few activities where I can. I initially upgraded it quickly to D-rating for most internals so I could get a decent jump range inexpensively.

I still use it for trying and learning new things -- where I don't want to risk my Cobra III or Keelback which cost significantly more to replace. Even with lots of A-rated guts now it still is in the lower 100K credit range to replace if something bad happens. The Cobra III and Keelback are probably 3-4 times as expensive to re-buy at this point.

Even after buying and upgrading a Cobra III, the Adder was the ship I first used to do planetary landings with a SRV, and the first I used to try mining. Those flights to complete my first mining mission turned out to be some some really hard-earned coin but it was my faithful Adder that helped me learn the ropes. At some point I'll try mining again and I suspect it will be a bit easier in some respects with a slightly more capacious vessel (more limpets, more refineries) but I may use the Adder again for this.

Last weekend I broke it out again because I picked up a pair of Deactivate Power Grid missions and quickly lost my expensive Keelback on a first attempt. These missions were intended to be sneaky rather than confrontational but after one early success that was a lucrative cakewalk I didn't know what I was getting into, so "mistakes were made" thinking this could be easily repeated. Ultimately the Adder also wasn't up to the task of completing that more difficult mission with my current knowledge and level of confidence in my skills but it served the purpose of allowing me to explore some possible approaches without risking breaking the bank.

So the Adder remains convenient to keep around pre-configured for planetary-scan-type missions where I am not expecting to need to fight or carry a lot of cargo but the ability to carry a SRV with decent jump range is appreciated. I will probably continue to use it this way for a while yet. I imagine the Hauler can be used similarly. The Adder's class-2 hardpoint makes it slightly more versatile (for example, you can mount a class-2 mining laser) but it's really not much of fighter either.

Great post, and welcome to the forums

The only thing that lets the Adder down as a planetary scanner is its power distributor; even G5 engine focused, you still have to wait for it to recharge after the engines have boosted down. Having said that, its speed probably more than makes up for that! And at least it stops when you tell it to, unlike the Cobra.

As for the Hauler I've flown one quite often but only as a disposable taxi or boom data carrier. I've never engineered one and I was going to, but went for the Adder instead. I'm pretty time-limited and couldn't do both

Much Thanks to all the commanders and their excellent replies o7

It is great to hear all the stories of other commander's first upgrades (hauler, adder, etc).

Yes, both my Sidewinder and Hauler will be fond to my heart, seeing that they both gave me the ability to now choose between the Mark III and Mark IV (still trying to decide which one to get for exploration, hauling, and general defense).

When I first annouced my purchase of my Hauler on the Xbox Live Elite Dangerous communities, a few of the replies to my post (and some personal messages sent to me) were "I'd blow that outta the sky with one shot" and "You'd be dead in a second" and "Only will take one shot"....blah, blah, blah. It seems that these individuals forgot one thing....that reality has already been realized and taken into account. When making the purchase and/or advancing the MORTradio enterprise, it is known that there will be Pirates, Serial Killers, and Griefers out there, and that is part of the business equation. And as one commander's quote states:

But if we ever need to load a ship with explosives to die with honor....my kamikadder will be ready.

"Why does God love the Marines....because we send him so many souls"

Because Elite Dangerous is a simulator, at times it has to be looked upon as a business, and the Sidewinder and Hauler have to be looked upon as investments. As explained in my original posting, the investment is small, but the return is very large. Any business man, from a small business owner to a CEO, would agree that that is a sound choice, a wise investment. Sure, the Sidewinder and Hauler can be destroyed quickly in batter (usually), but the investment is so small, its almost unnoticeable. Pay the insurance and start again.

I will always have 1 or 2 Sidewinders and Haulers available within the MORTradio Enterprise. They are, without a doubt, tough little machines that will make you money. Exploration is the ultimate goal of Elite Dangerous, to open new realms and expand our society, but to do that, the cold hard fact is that you need money, and the Sidewinder and Hauler can help you do that.

Yeah, I like my Hauler
