I lost merits for killing a CMDR that attacked me..............

So a CMDR, who was not in my faction interdicted me, we were both wanted and when I killed him this message popped up:

He wasn't even in my faction, this has never happened before, im not really bothered by the merit loss but the arrow next to the Empire is now facing down and red so I've lost some reputation, why did this happen?

You are not allowed to kill Empire ships while you are aligned with an Empire Faction Power. The same goes for all Faction Powers. This means that you cannot kill anyone from Arissa, Aisling and Torval as well as Patreus. Hudson pilots cannot kill Winters pilots and so on.

Wow that really needs changing, if they are wanted or attack me first it should be changed to nullify that

No , I disagree. there is a lore reason and a logical one.
the empire is not at war with it own memebers , not yet... but until an all out war starts you are not to kill anyone who belongs to the same global faction as you.
think of it this way :
UK and US are allies but they might want to out smart each other , but they will do it with spy and covert ops not by shooting there planes down

I'm sorry, but that's a nonsensical lore then, where self defense is punished.
Less lore and more common sense would do this a game a lot of good.

however I agree that in self defence it should not be punished.
what I think would be a fair system is if you attack an member of the same main faction you lose half your merits and if you kill him/her you lose all your merits and get a massive fine.
however the victime is free to fight back. thats how I would do it.

When the US kill others, it is selfdefens.
When other defend themselfs it is terrorism. ;)

Long Live the Alliance!

Lone:

You never mentioned if he fired on you first. Maybe he just wanted to say 'hi'
