I love Elite and I'm happy to be back!

So I've returned to Elite after a wee break, there was no specific reason for the break I just needed one and took the opportunity to enjoy some other games (Resident Evil 7 for example).

Anyway whilst I was on this break I got into No Mans Sky, for those unfamiliar with this title it's a PS4 game in which you are a planetary explorer and the entire structure of gameplay is centered around resource gathering and reaching the center of the universe (that's the nutshell version).

What instantly struck me was that it has a lot of similarities to Elite Dangerous, whilst I played it I couldn't help but be dissapointed with it and my mind kept wandering back to Elite all the time, thinking to myself "Elite does this better", "It's not as polished as Elite", "why am I not playing Elite?". I gave up and decided to return to Elite this week.

What struck me instantly was the visual quality of Elite, it hits you like a smack in the face. I must have become so used to it from playing so much that I wasn't even noticing it anymore. This rings true for the universe, frame shifting literally everything.

Content is what needs to be ramped up but I've got faith in FD, they are releasing their content in a steady stream, it's good stuff and although it doesn't always answer everyones whims it's still adding so much to the game.

So if you are not loving Elite just now, take a break and come back you'll discover a new level of appreciation. So far nothing really comes close to Elite and I'm glad I took a little timeout and have fallen in love with it all over again.

So play a 1990's looking arcade game like NMS and then come back ;)

lol, good joke about being "unfamiliar" with NMS, not just PS4, also PC, but just about the most hyped pre-ordered game of the decade if not this century.

Exactly, after taking a break and experiencing the likes of NMS and Andromeda, ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPOlAPsazHs ) there's a good chance of re-realizing how groundbreaking ED is and continues to be. For one, just flying around being amazed at the night sky, realizing wow, it's not a generic wallpaper backdrop, it's a real simulated star positioning of where you're at in the galaxy.

I bounced off Elite for a while myself but am firmly back.
I think the Engineer changes helped and the ancient ruins mission was a draw.
Nice to be back though, I'm currently out exploring.

The occasional break seems like a good idea, especially if you are missing some other elements. I rather enjoy Starbound as a diversion, lots of different things to do and a different pace.

To be fair. If ED had No Mans Sky's planetry diversity for atmospheric planets .. I'd be very happy.

It's a million leagues better than what we don't have now!

I think people over play this game. I play it, but not obsessively. I don't have any must have goals in such and such a time, such as Engineering or money. Maybe that gives more of a balance since I'm never getting over bored with doing the same thing over and over again.

I do code for it obsessively (EDDiscovery)!

Welcome back cmdr. Stay frosty out there.

Flimley

I couldn't agree more. The planets need a little more work for landing and enviromental effects but it'll all come in time and there are a lot of changes in the next update that are starting the game on a very particular and positive path which looks to be amazing (multi crew for example, the camera which I can't wait to try out).

The introduction of the alien hyperdictions, ruins and crash sites all made the game much more exciting for me as a person who likes exploration.

I was getting a sense of that with all the posts in the forum about the game which is why I made my post, if you need a break, take one.
You'll enjoy it more when you come back.

Honestly though, the NMS 'atmospheric' landings are not so dissimilar to what we have now. I'd prefer FD to take their time and get it right than rush it and not make it a unique experience

Yeah, I just think to myself, give the lads the time, the good stuff will come but for it to be better it has to be right.

playing NMS will show you whats great about elite, after you played it too long you wont see it anymore.

Yup, my experience too.

I played way too much ED in original beta and once live, subsequently taking several breaks from the game, and every time I come back I'm just bowled over by the shiny loveliness of it and the brilliant soundscape.

No game lasts forever, but I've already got fantastic value for money from ED, and I'm not finished with it yet! [up]

Urgh, it's just horrible :O

Anyway I wanted to make a positive post about Elite, a break of any kind if you play it a lot will help, it certainly did for me [smile]

Agree wholeheartedly OP. I think too many gamers these days view "taking a break" synonymous with quitting due to frustration with game mechanics or something.

There's a reason we don't eat the same meal 3 times a day for a month. We'd get sick of it before the end of the first week! :p

Variety is the spice of life here, folks.

Oh here we go another white knight coming in to say how much he likes the game.

What next a rational discussion on aspects of the game.
