I love Silent Running.

I just kit a Sidewinder for stealth, see here.

I went into the Eravate Nav, chock full of police and bounty hunters (both CMDR and NPC), at least 12. I accrued a bounty, and then activated Silent Running, disabled my thrusters and slid elegantly through the masses of them using FAoff. I haven't recorded it, but I've flown past police and watched CMDRs lose sight of me, only to hear lasers chewing through their drives seconds later.

SR is seriously fun to use and I'm sorry I waited this long to use it. Now to practice FAoff with the X52 instead.

Literally just been chatting to a chap running silent in a sidewinder and he's been maiming folk! :D Who is that flagrantly smelling guy!

By the way, have I mentioned your head looks like an onion?

A while ago I watched a video of a guy testing it with a friend, and it seemed that shutting off all modules was the only way to disappear from sensors, while silent running didn't really do much. This was maybe 5 months ago, so has it actually been fixed?

yea i love it too and its tons of fun , just a shame that we don't got more opportunities to use it.
when i started playing i imagined myself hiding in ambush behind some asteroid whit silent running on, waiting for a juicy target to fly by.
and i was a bit sad when i realized that the game was not really going to turn out like that.

Well, considering I had 0% heat and silent running on, and police could still attack me effectively from a kilometer away does not bode well (this happened about 45 seconds ago).

So, it's not amazingly effective against the AI, but that's why I'm in Eravate.

Ive always wondered in resource extraction sites where there is plenty of cover and on the dark side if AI can see in the dark?

Star Citizen has a major focus on that exact thing. Though your silent running will not be absolute, not even for a short time. You can't dampen to zero, but getting below background levels is enough.
