I love the Fuel Rats :-D

Funny you should post this - I'm on my way back from the galactic core (up near the roof) and I've just hit five neutron stars/ white dwarves in succession. I was watching the fuel guage quite carefully :)

Super brand new newbie question time~
I've never run out of fuel, I tend to stay topped off via my fuel scoop when possible and avoid dropping below 70%. I'm still in "The bubble" I believe(That's the big cluster of powerplay star systems right?)...

What are the most common reasons that people tend to run out of fuel/need the fuel rats help? Should I be watching out for some secret way to lose my fuel in the near future as I push further out?

Not looking at fuel reserves while jumping

^This.

I've been keeping below 50% to eek out that little extra range from the NS boost. I then found a patch of close together NSs and was happily jumping between them without keeping that oh so important eye on my fuel level.

Sometimes people run with half empty (or lower) tanks trying to push a bit further into those sparser regions where the stars are a bit further apart than you can jump with a full tank.

Sometimes people are jumping along, topping off as they go round stars, only losing a few percent of a tank in aggregate for most jumps and stopping for a complete refill only when they need to.

There is a layer of mostly brown dwarf stars across most of the galaxy around 60ly below the zero plane. If you are close to it the route planner will sometimes drop into it for an extended period and sometimes it's a good way to get across an other wise spare area.

Sometimes people are just jumping around in the Neutron Fields scanning those high value but unscoopable stars.

In all of those cases a momentary lapse in concentration can leave you sitting in an unscoopable system without enough fuel to jump out. (I got bitten by the second one, as I burnt off fuel I got one more jump than I'd been expecting but I didn't check the star and *boom* sitting by an L class star without the fuel to escape, 55kly from Sol).

There's no secret mechanic that'll steal your fuel, it's carelessness - however momentary it may be this is not a gentle game that holds your hand and comforts you.

Quite so.

I am now refuelled and would like to thank Fuel Rat Termite Altair for rescuing me and not making me feel like the dolt I undoubtedly am. They truly are the Knights of the Galaxy.

If there was an "I was rescued by the Fuel Rats" decal I would wear it with shame and honour.

All hail the Fuel Rats

:D

Although potentially dangerous, if you fly through the jets eminating from a nuetron star you get a message confirming you have a fuel boost. You can extend the range of your jumps and in some cases string them together to travel long distances.

I suggest you only do it in ships at least the size of an ASP.

Wow thanks. I am going to try that sometime. Be okay to do in a Python?

Yes, the Fuel Rats are a great group!

I've only had to be rescued once, but I was on the far side of the galaxy, near Beagle Point. It took 3 days for my rescuer to arrive, but I was extremely happy for the help, which allowed me to (later) sell hundreds of millions of credits worth of explorer data.

How did it happen? I didn't quite have my filtered stars set correctly in the galaxy map and wound up at a brown dwarf and couldn't scoop. The problem was triggered in part by my desire to keep a half-empty fuel tank, to increase my jump distance (out where the stars are far apart).

I will also hail the wonderful Fuel Rats and will not forget their great efforts in rescuing me from my stupidity :)

It happens. Almost had to call them last night. I was eating while flying through deep space. Came out of hyperspace into a system with a sun that wouldn't let me re-fuel. Then I noticed I had like enough fuel for 4LY jump. Lucky for me there was a bunch of systems to choose from since I was close to the core. I think it happens mostly (for me at least) when I am almost robotic about the journey since I have been flying for so long on it.

Yep,
going auto can do it.
Another is
not double checking
your destination star.

And so
the list of reasons are many
while the Rats are few
but will go to the extremes
to save us fools.

:D
