People change, games are pretty much based on the same things as always. I know them better than people, given the steady foundations, sadly. It is not a question of the game, but it is a question of how you look at games these days. This is an old school approach, in many ways. There must be time dedicated to dig into it, and there will be a need to look around for answers. And you need to have that "hands on" simulator mindset, in order to enjoy it. And probably not be addicted to something else entirely.
It is a gamble, for the variables are not easily combined into a finite result. The game was released a little early, there are some gaps there IMHO. Bear that in mind. I love it, but love is not quantifiable, it is very personal, and it is not a good basis for constructive criticism.
This is an expansive space simulator with potential, some areas not fleshed out so greatly as others. Probably need a joystick in order to enjoy it, not mandatory, but recommended. And a patience above average for the consumate consumer I guess. No flashy cut scenes, no hand holding, no narrator guiding your adventures. No bard to sing your praise, and no unicorns that I know of. But there will never be a strange voice saying "you cannot go that way" at least. You can, but only if you want to. And for those saying there is a sameness to it all, that's because space comes without variable biomes. Sorry to say. There are no mountains, forests, or swamps to traverse. Yet! Maybe in the planetary landing expansion?
Without interest, we will never know. What I do know, is that the only way to move forward, is to make that leap of faith. Obviously that will not work for all, and this game is not for all to enjoy. For we are not made equal. No factory standards apparently! Elite Dangerous is made in the same vein as the previous titles, not always an improvement, but it is more ambitious than ever. The only barrier would be time and interest, of that I'm sure!
