So did I last month - it's shame I expected to reach Elite on exploration first, but stuck on Pioneer 26% - still a very long way off on combat, I just don't do the pew-pew much.

Congrats! Trade was my first Elite, and I was so busy doing ranking (data and cargo) missions, I completely missed it. I'm not even sure when it happened. :S
