I may have set my expectations too high...

The colour separation you observe when looking at stars not dead centre is due to you looking slanted through the lenses and the colour is refracting and separating. This can be alleviated by moving the lenses closer to the eyes, but has the side-effect of requiring you to clean them more often because your eye lashes are coated in oils that will smear on the them. Of course, one easy upgrade to improve usability might be to cut all your eye lashes off. ;)

Sounds like the eye separation is an issue for you though. I'd never read anything before about the Rift calibration tool being inaccurate, so I'm going to have to try the alternatives tonight and see if it aids my usage. However, I'm pretty happy with the results, especially with the recommended HUD colour changes.
