I misunderstood Power Play, but I just got it!

The whole time, I thought why add new, slightly different, but almost the same reasons to repeat the same old cookie cutter quests. instead of improving tangible things, like exploration mechanics, fix many more bugs etc.

It just didn't seem to make any sense.

But thanks to this informative forum, it dawned on me:

Power Play is adding soap opera to Elite!
With still pictures...
Like the days of yore, before some old fogies invented motion pictures.

Now, there's only one thing left I I'm at a loss for: How will this ever pay off for FD without the ability to insert commercial breaks?

Well, really two things:

A soap opera with more power hungry, scheming, double crossing virtual humans doing the same tired soap opera garbage people already do here on earth, right now.
Why are we duplicating ugly stuff, the results of which people are trying to escape from, in the very games they're escaping to?

Brilliant work detective. Top notch.

You gave me too much credit.

I missed a major piece:

The fact, that with this, Elite's target customer base has just been switched from us to our girl friends and wives!

Cause who in the house watches soaps and who in the house would like to see the blaring TV moved to the dumpster behind the house?

For me the reason for PowerPlay is pretty clear. A certain segment has continually complained that there was "nothing to do" and the game was "boring". When it was pointed out that there was trading, fighting, min8ng and exploring and questioned further, it turned out that almost always "boring" meant that there was nothing to conquer, defeat or control over a longer period of time. Power Play is an upgrade for that kind of player. If you need to fight for and control the galaxy, Power Play is for you.

But then they'll follow that with "It has no meaning, it's unrewarding" and other "reasons".

Powerplay is Elite Dangerous' version of Game of Thrones. I thought you knew?
.
Not convinced? Aisling Duval is Daenarys Targaryen. 'nuff said.

Sounds about right. I guess this is why I find PP shallow, contrived, and meaningless.

err...nope. Aisling is too much of a spoiled brat princess and the pea with the party attitude of Paris Hilton and the general knowledge of Britney Spears.
Certainly not enough drama to be Targaryen.

Now that seems very plausible and would make the most sense of all the reasons I have heard so far about why PP was introduced.
Btw I do not feel totally forgotten by Frontier Developments because they thankfully made it optional.
Now, even if I don't like the way PP presents itself I sincerely hope it helps the game to attract more people. In the end it is very important this game is successful. I really really want the planetary landings. And that will only happen if the game continues to grow! ;)

Because for a change we can do something about it that won't land us RL persons in prison ?

I don't have a Televison since 1997, when I tossed out the last one. So I didn't have a chance to answer that one for myself...

But then they'll follow that with "It has no meaning, it's unrewarding".

Those are completely invalid arguments against soaps, as those are the desired key adjectives of soap operas :)
How much meaning can you assign to the mortar holding commercial bricks breaks together?

If you are annoyed that your wife watches soap opera all the time, that is your problem. Don't project your personal vendetta onto all women.
Amused would be the word, and I don't actually have a TV. :D My girl likes to play SWTOR for her soap needs.

Nothing like a good soap featuring Grand Moff Rycus Kilran, Darth Marr and of course Revan, who never ceases to return from the dead! At least its cinematic, sports superbly animated facial expressions and you get to have very direct interaction. It shows there's actually been advances made since card games.

And if somebody pokes fun at women's love of soaps, (which none will deny) "annoyance" and "vendetta" are simply not the terms that should invade your overstressed mind. You must ease off whatever you're smoking, maybe your humor will return to you, my good fellow.

You seem to have a good grasp of soaps, for someone with no TV....

If they put Power merchandise in their store, it will be money handed over in droves. A fair few people, including myself, really want those Power decals we saw in the trailer. And I would totally buy a Power specific pin as well.

I'm female. I also despise soaps and threw my own tv out years ago. And yes, I pre-ordered Elite before it came out and have been playing it since day 1. Think again before you make offensive assumptions about an entire gender.

If you are annoyed that your wife watches soap opera all the time, that is your problem. Don't project your personal vendetta onto all women.

What Mephane said. I'm sick and tired of seeing commanders here complaining about their wives or girlfriends "not letting" them play Elite or not "getting" the game. If you got into a relationship with someone who doesn't share your passions and doesn't understand you, that's for you to deal with.

Now your's is a unique and forward turn.
It is a perfectly good thought.

Though I find your argument perfectly charming, I must disagree:

1) In Elite, this doesn't hold true, you can't actually "do" anything about a bunch of 2D still images of various factions, and all you do when pledging your support to one of them, is to help one scumbag to step over the other scumbags. That doesn't look like much of a counter to scumbags ruling the earth and your 'involvement' is awfully indirect, what with taking the same old cookie cutter missions over and over for points and vouchers instead of credits and normal faction rep.

2) But lets say in some other game, better suited to "do something about it", you'd still be involving yourself in that same conduct unworthy of the human spirit. Like cowboys and indians, police and robbers, its all focused on the same thing: Antagonism. You can't improve real life antagonism, by creating more antagonism in virtual worlds. Its futile and will only strengthen the mindset.
