I must be crazy....yes or no?

So my wife agreed to me buying a rift but I'm actually having second thoughts. Here are my concerns.

1. I wear reading glasses to see when I game, can't see clearly without them.

2.I'm old and retired so I game alot for extended periods, will I have to limit game play sessions?

3. I'm not exactly a computer whiz though I did build my own pc, is it to tech heavy for me?

4. It appears new advancements are coming fast, rumors of v2 vive this year. Would it be better to wait a few months and see where things go.

5. Anyone buy a rift and wish they'd bought a vive?

Any help would be awesome, thanks in advance.

Regards, Dave.

Try and see, it has room for glasses. Although if you just use reading glasses, you prob won't need them as the focal distance is pretty "far"
2.I'm old and retired so I game alot for extended periods, will I have to limit game play sessions?
At first you will. But you will get used to the Oculus Rift in time and be able to play for hours. Just take the first 2 weeks slow. Every time you feel the slightest hint of nausea, take of the rift and play in 2D again until the next day.
3. I'm not exactly a computer whiz though I did build my own pc, is it to tech heavy for me?
Very very simple. There's also a guide, about 5 steps long, stickied in this forum.
4. It appears new advancements are coming fast, rumors of v2 vive this year. Would it be better to wait a few months and see where things go.
No idea :) although isn't that the timeless question for any tech? IMO, unless you are planning on getting two 1080s too, the any second gen VR headset will have trouble running. But yeah, who knows

Answered what I could!

Same here, but I don't need my glasses in the Rift, it all depends on your prescription. This page on the Oculus support website tells you what size frames will fit inside the Rift.

2.I'm old and retired so I game alot for extended periods, will I have to limit game play sessions?
There are two sides to this. First, the perceived resolution is not as high as a monitor and whilst in most VR games/experiences this makes little difference it is most noticeable in ED (small ships in the distance etc.). I find my eyes getting tired after a while but nothing major. YMMV. Second, some people will feel nauseous at first others won't, again we are all different. I'm still in the "getting used to it" phase.

3. I'm not exactly a computer whiz though I did build my own pc, is it to tech heavy for me?
Piece of cake :)

I would be amazed if that were true, but who knows. You can wait forever.

5. Anyone buy a rift and wish they'd bought a vive?
No regrets here.

Well if nobody's gonna talk me out it I'm going to order one then, thanks for replies. Wish me luck. Lol

Hopefully I'll live till it gets here.

Just bought so a few answers

1. Glasses fit fine, I have varifocals and they are no problem - I also have a single vision pair for my work (Engineering drawings etc) and I tried them as well and made no real difference. Little known with the vive is that you can adjust it if need be (where the straps attach are grey circlular things pull them out and you can then pull the front bit forward or push it back) this gives loads of room for specs
.
2. I am getting longer sessions - there is a weight on your head and some things can introduce a bit of nausea but you get used to it (show the realism your eyes and fluid in ears are working against each other!) Never had any in my ship but do get it with the debug camera a lot and a little with the SRV. Strangely their are two check boxes to reduce nausea - if I check these and in 3D I feel it, if they stay checked and I go 2D its worse!
.
3. I found it "Fairly" straight forward to set up BUT the light houses and controllers all needed a firmware update - also read up on hints and tips, set up Bluetooth (easy) so as to power manage the lighthouses, also worth setting up the external camera initially
.
4. Its worth getting in and understanding it - it has just changed elite totally for me, I had a stand behind my copiloys seat this morning! weird I have thought about moving my HOTAS into position and flying from the copilots position - just because I can!
.
5. looked at both, a few things made up my mind one of which was the external camera, which I find extremely useful

I wear reading glasses for the computer as well. The Rift (and Vive) are focused at infinity. So, as long as your vision is good while driving a car, for example, then you will probably NOT need glasses in VR. I don't.
