I need some advice (please help)

Ship: Imperial Courier (Class 5 Frame shift drive)
---------------------------

Debating on whether or not I should keep my 3A Enhanced Thrusters. They would be fun for planetary landings/flying around.

With this module^ on, I am at 34.72ly jump range - If i take them off, I hit 37.08 (2D thrusters)

--------------------

If I'm going to downgrade the thrusters (because I can't boost), I may aswell change the Power Distributor to 1D - If I change, I then hit 38.05.

---------

Quick summary - 34.72lys with really fast thrusters for planetary landings, or that extra 4lys.

Which one would you choose? ^^

I would really appreciate any advice on my situation.
sorry if it was confusing

I would keep the enhanced thrusters. And i would also consider a power distributor that would allow boosts, because then i wouldnt worry about interdictions when returning to the bubble. I always consider that 0,005 percent of an exploration trip: the return to the bubble. I imagine to be interdicted by an NPC with railguns + rockets on that last few lightseconds before i am safe and speed is the best defensive available.

I am using an ASP with 34.34 LY range and so far I have not hit any issues with the range. Personally, I'd rather have some oomph with the thrusters to make the landings on high G planets easier. Plus shields of course.

Edit: Having said the above it depends on what you want to do. For me staying out there comes first even if it means more jumps to reach any specific destinations. Higher range by 4 LY would be beneficial in certain cases. Perhaps more experienced explorers may be able to offer a different view on the matter?

I would keep the thrusters, unless you specifically plan to travel a very long distance or plan to visit very remote areas.
34 ly, for reference, is easily enough to reach Beagle without needing boosts.

What everyone else above said. Efficient and powerful thrusters are essential for outrunning interdictions if you get pulled down into normal space.

Ship micromanagement of power systems helps.

I've never found trading off some jump range to be a disadvantage while exploring.

See you out there!

I concur, 34ly is plenty for all but the most extreme systems - I've done 341kly in a 25ly Cobra, 34 is *loads* - and ability to run away (plus shields in case you take a hit or two while doing it) is paramount if you get interdicted. Stick a good enough power distributor in to let you boost for the same reason. Plus you can, if you're that way inclined, have more fun more safely flying around planet surfaces with better thrusters.

Post your complete set up with ED Shipyard or Coriolis for more detailed refinement suggestions if you want them...

Even the littlest things will decrease the jump range with this ship , talking about the scanners and the planetary hangar takes a huge 4lys off.

(can't seem to add the modded class 5 frame shift drive so imagine it says 32-34ly)

Depending on where you want to travel, you could downgrade to a class 2 fueltank and save 4 tons of weight. This means you definetely need two refuel after every second jump, but its doable in most areas (avoid the layer of unscoopables then).

Keep the thrusters, other than them being fun they'll make your return a lot safer - interdicting ships can't kill you if they can't catch you. That's a nice range on a courier btw - I assume grade 5 range mod?

if you especially go for planetary exploration, I'll keep th thrusters. the straight line speed makes cruising above a surface fast and enjoyable.

34 ly jumprange (on a full tank) is more then any usefull exploration AspE or DBE had before engineers.

also, the difference in travelling long distances fast will be very minor. you might need 1 or 2 jumps every 1000 ly route plotting more - that's 90 seconds.

i know, many explorers get jumprange-junkies (I am one, too), but in reality it isn't that important, as long as you are not into record-breaking. also, more jumps - more systems visited :)

btw.: courier is an amazing exploration ship, because it has one of the best fuelscoopsize/fsd class relations ingame.

Planetary Landings :
Everyone says shields, and they are correct ! But some forget that BOOST is also very important !
If you are going towards the surface too fast(for whatever reason) , you only need 1 boost(in most cases) to save yourself, point away from ground and boost and watch your vertical downwards speed diminish :)

why are you desperate for range, that would be my question.

you don't need more than 34 for exploring unless your pushing the edges of the galaxy but then there are better ships for that?

besides, larger thrusters are better for

- Running from Data pirates & npcs
- Fun on planets
- High g planet landings
- faster to cover surface ground on planets

if you spend your life honking and charging the FSD and if your limited on time or want to get there quicker a longer range might be better, but that's the ONLY benefit. - and trust me space honking is madness

Space madness gets to me easily haha. I travelled to Sagittarius A* in my Anaconda but I ended up selling it because it turns...so...slowly.

I wanted to experiment with a small ship, grinded the imperial rank to unlock the Imperial Courier, stuck a lucky class 5 frame shift drive on it. I always loved the view, the shape of the ship - like a fighter pilot and i don't feel too much exposed as to the Asp Explorer.

This is the ships jump range fully stripped down (without scanners, planetary hanger, shield generator) and thats on 8 fuel tank capacity.

----------------------------------------------------------

I do like to get to places quick because Space Madness haha. But it's for the views huh? I'm planning to visit the popular tourist locations.
-----------

I know there are better ships out there for jump range, but everyone chooses those. I want to reach Beagle Point someday and surprise someone.. just that reaction ^_^

Hey, who cares about what "everyone" is doing? Do what makes you happy, there is no wrong way to do anything, just the way you fancy and like. I love my Asp but that doesn't mean that if at some point I find some ship I love more, I won't switch it. But not an Anaconda. I'm not a "massive-ship" girl, me, I'd rather have elegance and views. View always wins. :D
