I need treatment.

Twice I have worked my way up from a free sidewinder to a Viper. Twice I have splurged spent more than I should have gearing it out, and twice I have pancaked it into a random object and been unable to afford the insurance to buy it back (though this last time it was due to the net issues brought around by the latest patch).

Starting a self-help group for the compulsive spender and pancaking crowd.

Aah, the old standby "Self Accountability Realization Support Group" found in many a community center around the world.

I sympathize. I myself have worked up to Cobra then nothing 3 times in a row.

So those support groups are good for those that need it....

.. other may only require this anecdote: "the dumbest dog in the world will walk into a glass door just once"

Sometimes playing ED feels like participating in online gambling. It's a high-risk affair with a lot of (fake) money at stake. Something as simple as entering and exiting a space station comes with extreme risk and I often feel more like I'm playing Poker than piloting a ship.

Having said that, if it were possible to buzz around in space in a real ship, I think you'd feel pretty cautious about the real risks. If you are willing to accept the risk of exiting a space station too quickly or not leaving enough money for insurance then you better check that you're playing to have fun because you're not playing with a winning hand.

I also completely empathise, as I've been there a few times myself.

Maybe the Viper should come with an advanced piloting course like the 911. Too much raw power :p

what is needed is an insurance fund...

i.e. get new ship, get stuff, put aside credits into insurance fund, then you won't accidentally spend it on that last bit of trade goods.

Reminds me of the first time I upgraded from the Sidewinder. I had just bought a Hauler and spent the rest of my cash buying the most expensive commodity I could find for a quick sale two systems away. Well, I was so excited that I pressed the boost key instead of the vertical thrust key on take-off. You can imagine what happened. Back to the Sidewinder.

A few hours of trading later, I had once again made enough money to buy another Hauler. Again, I used whatever I had left to stock up on the most expensive commodity I could trade. No pancaking inside the station this time but I maxed out engine power as soon as I left the station, and locked and engaged hyperdrive before aligning with my destination. Took me a minute to find the right direction and I wasn't paying attention to the temperature. As soon as I arrived at the next star, the Hauler overheated and exploded.

After that, I actually took the time to write down a pre-flight check and make a point of reading it before I take off with anything valuable on board. Oh, and I always keep money for insurance.

Thing is, it's no big deal really. With a Hauler you can make enough money to buy a decent ship within a couple of hours.

100% Self inflicted. The fact you didn't learn from your 1st mistake is, well, errr...school boy error.
Always reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Bart tried to steal a cupcake:

Why people constantly spend all their cash on ships, equipment and/or cargo only to lose everything in one go I have no idea.

I never, ever, ever spend more than 50% of my credits.
Yes, I have crashed like you all, yes I have been caught out by insurance bugs, and backend user profile wipes, yes I have lost a lot of credits and ships due to bugs...but regardless of this I always have enough credits to carry on where it all went wrong.

The same applies to people who keep 10 years of photos and docs on a laptop without backing it up only for the laptop to be stolen.
100% self inflicted.

What I have found to be a better approach to just go pure combat is to save some credits first. Maybe more tedious but hey. I went trader, first Hauler, then Lakon 6 and then Lakon 9. Forgot all about Eagles and Vipers and Cobras during that time. Just make sure that when you trade you dont go "all in" and leave some Cr. in the bank each trip for insurance and some commodities just in case.

Built up to 13 million in a couple weeks this way and now I have just ecently sold my Type 9 and went for a fully kitted Viper.

With all the Cr. I have now I can easily test all the different loadouts, see what weapons work best with my gamestyle etc. And losing a Viper here and there barely scratches the surface of my savings :D

Thanks but I'll pass, it only takes a couple hours to earn enough for a Viper.

Whaaat?! Couple of hours for a Viper, are you kidding? How?!

I recently did something similar with a Sidewinder, forgetting that I'd fitted it with Burst Lasers which emptied my bank balance then went to a conflict zone. Was doing lovely until I got rammed, lost the lot and back to square one. Gutted. :(

If you have a hauler its a couple of hours trading to afford a Viper. Once you have a Lakon, a couple of hours trading will get you several vipers, fully kitted out.

It's a slow start, but trade up to a hauler, then Lakon and soon you'll have enough money to buy, equip and insure a Viper.

Being a fighter jockey in ED is a risky business. You WILL loose your ship at some point. Best to build up a large financial cushion first so you dont have to restart from nothing.

You have a great attitude toward your losses which makes a refreshing change from the norm.

The upside is that you are learning from this now and from Gamma onwards you should not over invest in your ships and equipment, that way you need never start from scratch.
