I needed this.

When I was younger I used to get lost in games like this. The old MechWarrior games and pretty much any space sim. I also remember I would just go sit in my Mother's car and pretend I was flying an X-wing. Something happened to me in the past 10 - 15 years. I just couldn't immerse myself in anything. I guess as we get older it is harder to use our imagination. I have played this game on and off for a couple of years but couldn't really get into it.

A few weeks ago I bought the Rift on a whim. After the tutorial and initial demo I was so impressed the first thing I thought of was this game. After downloading and getting into my cockpit I swear I had tears of joy. This has exceeded my expectations.

I immediately scheduled a week off from work. This past week I set up a VR room, upgraded my PC and built a Hotas setup around an existing chair (complete with a beer holder). My wife was so happy I was interested in something she even went to the craft store and built some padded armrests.

I finally got everything setup and have been able to sit down and play for the last couple of days. I am having a blast. I am still reacquainting myself with the game so I have mostly just done missions and flying tourists around.
I am 10 years old again.

Also, consider learning to fly FA off. Mate. Smashing through trenches FA off is as close to the dream as you can get. My fav ship for this? Performance enhanced Sidewinder! For real!

I felt the exact same way 3 years ago when I ran across videos of the alpha. It was time for a brand new top of the line computer. VR just made it so much better for me. Congrats on your new setup.

Now I'm just waiting to do it all over again for generation 2 VR, and hoping FD fixes the game in the meanwhile.

Welcome to Elite in VR!

The step from playing a game to flying a spaceship is such an incredible thing. I will never step back.

Fly safe CMDR! o7

Yeah! A Sidey is a great ship, once youve put some millions and a handful of upgrades into it! I recommend a four player Sidey stealth wing... Most fun i had in the game so far!

One thing I have found (through the fact the the audio to the Rift headphones gave up the ghost, but that's a different story) is that VR is even better without the headphones if using instead a decent surround sound system.

Obviously less pleasant for family members or the neighbours, but it you haven't tried it, unscrew those headphones and give it a go.

Also, I might show my wife this: "My wife was so happy I was interested in something she even went to the craft store and built some padded armrests."

And go "See?"

Doubt it would have the desired effect though, lol.

Actually the Discovery Scanner through a subwoofer it is the awesomest. Jealous of the VR people. Me want. o7

Man I wish I bought the Rift sooner. I am still loving it. I'm going to have to earn a few more credits before I get to playing in the trenches. Despite the quality issues I took a chance with the X56 Hotas and I am loving controlling vertical and horizontal thrust with the 2 mini sticks. I'll have to try FA off and see if I can pull of some BSG style flip maneuvers in combat. How do you handle your forward and backwards throttle with FFA off? Say for example someone was behind me chasing me and I wanted to flip my ship to face him but keep my momentum going in the same direction.

Yeah sure... after almost a year VR is still mindblowing for me. My daily two hours of vacation :)

Combat in flight assist off is not easy. I usually use boost to rapidly adjust forward motion. You can control speeds with the energy pip setting before hitting boost. For finer maneuvering i use the lateral thrusters to fire impulses instead of the throttle.
I dont know, if the X-56 offers enough analogue input for all six axis. The control that analogue axis offer over digital input is immense. Put as many thruster controls on analogue axis as possible.

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS with T.Flight rudder pedals and a set of Cougar MFDs (which are excellent to handle in VR, far better than any keyboard, by the way) to control my ship. The stick offers excellent precision and centers on total zero, allowing to fly without a deadzone.

Similar experience here. For decades now, I've been planning to build a cockpit, so that I could really immerse myself in space-related things, but didn't have any idea what games I'd be able to use for that, and never bothered to get started. I was always sad that the Space Sim genre was dead, so when both ED and Star Citizen started up their kickstarter campaigns a few years ago, I hedged my bets and signed up for both.

When ED came out, I was busy with other games and projects, so I didn't try it right away. When I did eventually try it out, I couldn't get into it. Between the learning curve, and not being happy with the keyboard/mouse inputs, I just set it aside. This year, I bought the Rift when the price dropped, mostly on a whim, and toyed with it here and there. For a few months, I'd see ED in the Oculus store, taunting me. Then in April, I couldn't resist trying ED again, with the hopes that it would be the simulation I wanted. I've never looked back. My wife is lamenting how much time I'm spending with it, but then I reminded her about my cockpit plans. Now that I have VR, I don't need to build anything! I think that was a bit of a relief for her. :) (Although I did do some modifications to my computer area. I wall-mounted the Oculus sensors, for one. And I also bought clamp-on desk mounts for the HOTAS, all of which I bought because of ED).
