I never ever fall into star's gravity well while fuel scooping...

...unless, of course, I am 3000 lightyears from closest outpost. Then I do it three times in three consecutive systems.

I suck....

Sorry guys, just needed to share my frustration. :D

How do you scoop? Moving fast, or the slow approach face on to the star? Latter is quite controllable. You can sit there between 98% and 110% for ages

EDIT: this leaves you wide open to interdiction though, so don't try this in Lave!

when this happens and you have no heat sinks, wait till the heat drops then initiate FSD and align with the escape vector. At this point kill the FSD drive but don't move your direction, wait till you cool off again and initiate FSD. This will allow you to escape without succumbing to further damage.

Arrive at star from jump with close to zero velocity.
Appoach star slowly, until optimum scooping / heat reached.
Stop.
Fill up.
Collect Green Shield Stamps then drive away.

I have a fuel scoop which goes up to 75/s, so I basically throttle up until the scoop reach 55-60/s and then throttle down. My hull temp reaches 97-98 this way, so no need to panic.

Hehe, thanks guys. I DO know how to fuel scoop. Usually.
It's just that now I just kind of don't pay attention. Grrr...

I usually scoop stationary aroud 2/3 of fuel scoop max to keep temperature under 100%.
There's no worry about interdictions, here. :D

Sigh. Luckily I'm on my way back. :)

Arindor, I've got C6 scoop. I refuel at 500 whatevers/s ;)

The trick is to approach pointing just above the yellow no fly line, at just over minimum throttle. Work out at what scoop rate your fuel scoop works when your ship is at 100% heat and throttle down to zero when you hit that rate. Turn off non-essential modules (shields, power distributor, weapons) if you're in safe space as that will lower your heat (and fuel consumption).

Green Shield Stamps! Hi Grandpa!

Brings back memories of sticking them in the book with my Mother. Dad was in sales and came home every, week with about a million stamps!

The way I safely fuel scoop is:

- target the star. If unexplored, wait a second then target the unexplored bright fusion object directly in front of me.
- check my functions tab to the right to ensure that the "show orbit lines" is ENABLED.
- Line up at edge of star, so I know ill miss it, then roll inverted so star is "above me"
- as I approach, watch for the "orbit line" near the star that signifies the orbital period of the 8-20 million degree Near Corona (magnetic flux line friction heated, in case you were wondering)
- vary my pull pack to keep that "yellow line of NOGO" up near the heat bar, where my attention should be during this time anyway. At NO TIME allow that nogo line to pass the "horizon bars" left and right of display
- do a full speed arc, basking in the sunlight (that is thankfully off screen)
- If I have a next jump coordinate or station destination in mind, target it at this time and arrange so my pull back around the star will line me up with it- more or less
- watch the temp guage. When it gets to 140%, peel away to deep space to cool back down. If its a GIANT star, Ive learned to pull back sooner to escape the heat in time (to stay under damaging 150%). ((Betelgeuse darn near killed me!))

- If tank is not full at this point, I slap myself in the forehead for skimping on fuel scoop upgrades, and go back to step 1 and do it all over again.

:)

Yellow? I always thought the line is blue. o_O
Maybe I have more problems than I thought! :D

And yes, I know all that stuff. Theoretically, apparently, as I still am able to stupidly pitch under. >.<

Ship speed appears to have little or no effect on the speed you scoop at. That appears to only depend on your distance from the star, though since stars all have different sizes, the 'ideal distance' is different for every star. Sigh. Anyway, I always scoop at minimum speed, since that significantly reduces the risk of taking heat damage, though I travel faster than that to get close enough to the star to scoop.
