I now see the serious limiting factor in constant restarts.

If any of you have noted my name and occasional posts when the subject of career restarts is brought up - or the use of "Ironman mode" - I am all about it.

Old '85 guy but I have been doing ED for over a year and in that time have done probably 8 or 10 restarts; 3 for Ironman reasons and the rest because I just felt like it. I like the small ships and I don't mind scrabbling for money to buy and improve ships, etc. Get to play maybe 6 hours on a good week. Going single ship career but that's not a problem...I think.

For the past 4 weeks or so (since my last restart) I think I see a flaw in this restart logic - and your mileage may vary depending on your play style and what you expect out of ED.
And that flaw is the "emergent content"(?) if that is the right phrase or in other words - any play out of the ordinary. I like standard play but sometimes you want to join the boys on a team project.

Lately when semi-cool things pop up like "come see the aliens" or a Distant Worlds thing or a neat CG I can't play because I am almost always in starter ships - and since these things are time limited - I cannot get involved as I don't have the ship or resources for it.

Not a whine (and this post is long enough) but this may be my last "eh" restart so I will have the ship and the modules ready for the (hopefully) cool upcoming events.

Yes that is an idea.
"Eh" restarts are over (I think) and since the "rebuy" is explained away by the Escape Pod guess I am not wholly convinced anymore on the Ironman thing.

Alt account is an idea but splitting my paltry playtime a week will require further thought.

Once instant teleports are in you'll be able to knock around in your sidey until your heart is content, then insta-summon Python from the magical ship bag to do those GAMEPLAY! sort of events you'd otherwise miss out on.

No need for an alt account, just stash a Python at a decent tech'd up shipyard and cast summon (with the appropriate gold pieces) when needed.

I sort of know how you feel. There was a point late last year when I had like $300+ million, had a super-Python, Anaconda, had owned Clipper and such. And I started feeling a bit like even a mission for $700k was not "worth" my time to play it.

Horizons was just releasing at that time, and it allowed the player to start with the Sidewinder and SRV. So I deleted my save after installing Horizons, and had a great time starting from scratch. I was most thrilled by flying the small ships. Quite a bit of variety and fun there, all forgotten once I got into the bigger ships. And the constant hustle for extra cash is really great fun for me, and kind of makes me miss those days once I start sitting on a big enough bank account.

So here I am, 9 months into the new save. I've got nearly $600 million, have been goofing with trading in a nicely spec'd Type-9 (never tried it before, and am enjoying it).

But they key thing for me has been not forgetting the small ships, those tiny corners of the galaxy where some interesting stuff may be happening. I'm spending lots of time in the Cobra Mk3, and loving it still. I run little missions for reputation, I flew it out the Pleiades to see the alien shipwreck, found a UA with it. Really fun. Soon I may revisit another old small-ship favorite, the Viper Mk4.

I have just quit caring about the gathering of credits. If I wanted to sink $300 million into my Type-9, Orca, or whatever, I could. Could spend that on an Anaconda whenever the mood strikes, and be on my way. I've got enough money to do most anything, so I try to keep a broad view of what seems interesting in the galaxy, and focus getting out there and enjoying it.

I don't understand that part. You don't need a big, expensive ship in this game.
Getting into an A rated Sidewinder shouldn't take that long after a restart. Modding that Sidewinder for better jump range and a few other things and you are in a ship that can do everything (OK almost - PvP against a wing of 4 heat-meta-FDL is probably a very bad idea).
You don't have to do something you don't want to (not reseting) just to got to the alien crash site or to Jaques (for that a hauler is probably better than a Sidewinder) or participating in a CG or …

I did a soft reset (carefully spending credits until I reached a nice number x + 1000 cr and then get killed and not using the re-buy) around December and worked my way back to an A rated Sidewinder. I participated in two CGs (in Open), I bounty hunted in RES sites, did some exploring and trading.

Well yes I certainly can afford an A-rated Sidewinder (I think) but never thought of it as the type of ship to jump far and fast and still have the capability to do something once you get there. I can check it out but bless you for taking a Sidewinder to CG's.

Wih Engineers, any motivation I had for ironman is gone.

No way am I going through the hoop-jumping to unlock Qwent and Palin again.....no way Jose.
