I played 'Solo' this week...

 The shame....

:D Reading the brouhaha about the new AI, I decided to see what all the fuss was about for myself. I took my weakest ship- a Lakon 7- loaded up with shinies and headed for the most dangerous places I could find.

I selected solo because I know exactly how long a Type lasts when there are player killers around... there's nothing to be learned there.

The verdict?
  • Anarchys are no more dangerous than any place else. I made runs carrying over a million in silver into a station allegedly run by 'The Blue Hand Pirates' or similar for more than an hour without a single interdiction. Not quite the risk versus reward experience I expected.
  • Likewise, 'safe' systems aren't. All my interdictions were in well populated, heavily policed systems.
  • The AI flies well. Not so well that they can't be avoided, but well enough to pose a significant challenge in supercruise and real space. This is a good thing.
  • Random AIs are ridiculously overgunned! What in Nine Hells are 'impulse attacks'? And why can Eagles carry them? This is not a good thing! :D (Apparently FD are going to tone that down a bit next week).
  • Missions and the mission board have been tweaked. I approve! It reminds me of those pirate games you used to get- Tortuga and so on- but without having to marry a Spanish Princess to get to the next level.
  • Missions are still obtuse as frack! I took on a few 'boom time' runs- source and ship x tons of shinies back here for large payout. It was only when I'd found the cargo that the mission updates with a 'btw, peeps will be trying to kill you for this, have a bonus for every one you kill right back'. Killing a stock n00bwinder is an achievement in a Type 7; Deadly Fer de Lances are a bit out of it's league. ;) This is also a good thing- that crazy English sense of humour at play again!

I stopped the experiment after my latest Type 7- Samson- went the way of her sisters. The Lakon is still viable; I was extremely chuffed to have avoided death at the hands of a Deadly FdL, survived a whole clutch of new weapons (seriously though, what the frack are 'impulse attacks'?) and earned a ton of money playing the new missions. I'm afraid that I'm parting company with the Type 7 though. The new missions are fast, fun and a tad risky. They just don't suit the big girl at all. A FDS can carry almost as much as a decently shielded T-7, land on medium pads and defend herself, all for the cost of a handful of light year's jump range. Anyone got any ideas for a name? I was thinking Bradan Dubh? Or maybe Reannach Buidhe Mor, if I get the vibrant paint pack?

Tl;dr the latest patch is pretty good, especially the way AI fly and fight now. The stupidly overpowered engineered weapons are a pain in the harris. And the Lakon is useless in a fight! :D

What do you think? There are a ton of AI threads for talking specifics, but what's your feeling about the patch overall? Good, bad, or are you just indifferent to it all?

The patch is Great,Tons of new stuff and improovments added,Ai is finally dangerous and respectfull like real cmdrs,i dont care anymore, which kind of player interdict me human or npc,Run For Your Life is my so far best taktic.😄 oh i forgot that open play mode is safer mode to be right now, why? Because of option to wing with your friend(s) and reduse your chance of duying to 50%33% ect with hope npc will start shooting chaising somebody else than you,so guys dont log in solo you have been warned.
