I propose a sticky, living, online "game manual/guide" thread. The first post should be the official game guide

And from there, data approved as accurate would continue to be added, filling in all the annoying little knowledge gaps and making revisions on-the-fly as new builds/patches go live. Not just a "here's how you do this" type manual but a guide aimed at those who have difficulty with the open-sandbox, no-end-game nature of the game. A guide for those who need a single, written guide to tell them how to do things and also explains why the game works the way it does. The first post would be the "official" player guide and would expand from there. i.e.:

I have a ship and 1000 credits. What now?
Common pitfalls (Did you check those cargo rack sizes?)
Detailed instructions for use of (shipyard, outfitting, scanners, limpets, cameras, engineers, etc.) all those things that are simply not intuitive and not well explained.
Best practices in game strategies, ship outfitting, combat, mining, engineers, explorations, etc.
Detailed explanations, incorporating game-lore, wherever possible and applicable.

IMO one of the biggest and most immersion-breaking problems for newer players is the time spent outside the game simply finding data on the basics, not necessarily the very basic what and the how (but that, too), but also the why that explains the what and the how and all in one place. There is a lot of available data but it is scattered. Many developers do not want to develop & print a manual simply due to cost and size (ever seen the F-16 Fighting Falcon manuals?) so a player-created, free, persistent, online user-guide might be just what the doctor ordered.

Not a bad Idea at all but it's going to be a lot of work for you. Personally I just say "Google" and voice attack opens up a page on my second monitor :)

This is something i commented on way back in the original beta. The amount of support material actually in game is nearly nonexistent. Yes the manual is on the launcher and folks get a welcome email with links to things such as the Galactic Academy Discord server (were folks can ask questions to community mentors). However a few simple training videos/interact content or even some basic tooltips, would not go amiss.

So you're basically proposing a Hitch Hikers Guide to Elite Dangerous?

Make it a Wiki with a couple of moderators, pages can be added/edited by anyone/vetted individuals but the updates are only made "live" once a moderator has reviewed them for accuracy and suitability.

Would be awesome to add lore and "flavour" too along the lines of the original Elite "Space Traders Flight Training Manual", which remains my favourite game manual of all times.

I'd be game for an "annotated manual" approach, with the official manual cut into manageable sections and then open for curated additions.

That would require FD's permission to remix that manual though, and if possible also some support in making it easier to edit and "recompile". It would also require a bunch of reasonably agenda-free editors.

In game browser would be handy for such things, but I just use the Steam overlay most of the time. I don't frequent a lot of sites in game these days.

Get where you are coming from though OP.
