I purchased Elite: Dangerous long before Steam release and havent played it in quite some time. Now I wanted to jump back in and wanted to ask where I can download the game as it seems like its only purchasable via Steam nowadays...

Log into Frontier store. Look under your downloadable products.
Not sure why you would think that as it clearly available on the Frontier Store

its obvious to me that although they had a fairly big uk launch and advertising campaign it was no were near big enough as they felt the need to join steam months after the game was released on above website to boost sales (crack the usa market)
