I quit, because of heat

No, not the thermal weapons.

The heat beat my computer today. I walked away for 10 minutes while Elite was loading, came back and my POS Corsair (EDIT: nope, it was a Cooler Master) closed-loop watercooler had bitten the big one. CPU, motherboard and GPU all toast, about £700 of damage altogether.

And the wife apparently took the accidental damage upgrade off the contents insurance two months ago "...because we've never used it".

My laptop's good enough for work (Lenovo Yoga 2, with the ludicrous 3200x1800 resolution), and while the screen would be glorious for Elite...the integrated Intel GPU ain't ever gonna be up to the task.

Fare thee well in the black, ladies and gents. It's gonna be a while :(

That sounds painful... Glad you still have the gear to get work done, but if you can't play hard.. Well... You know :D
Good luck finding a way back into the game someday.

Feel bad for you man.

This is why I didn't go for water on my PC.

Using a Hyper 212 EVO instead.

Galloping galaxies! Really sorry to hear about your loss, Digitalscream. Um ...... I've just ordered a brand new high spec Chillbast PC with an i7, a 1080, 32GB RAM etc for VR. It's clocked of course but as I adjusted the spec, because I don't know anything about such things, I left the cooler alone. It's called a: 'Chillblast Centurion Direct Contact CPU Cooler' Um ...... is there anything I should know?!?!?! Anyone??

Funny you should mention your pc just gave up the ghost, just been having power problems with mine. Middle of playing elite doing some mining ops and I suddenly hear a crackling noise a few times and the whole pc dies and reboots itself. Sounds like the power supply but turned it back on and it appears ok for now. I suspect them npc's in the rings have some new kind of weapon and are spamming my hardware. Either way, I suspect it is linked to the heat the uk is having today.

That's really bad. My condolences.
Also you aren't the first person who was let down by Corsair cooling system. In fact there's quite a lot of you. How long have you been using it? maybe it would be worth the try to contact them about it.

Crackling you say? If I were you, I'd check the case for vibrations while running and then I would remove the power supply and very carefully inspect the fan, because it sounds like a fan blade have been damaged and who knows what damage it did to the internals. (It's a PC equivalent of a bird strike)
If some capacitors were damaged, it may work alright so far, but once GPU fires up in full, for example, the stress can cause an overvoltage, which can be quite spectacular and expensive show.

Sorry about your loss.
Anyone running a water cooling setup should have safeguards in place. Setup your system so that it gives you an alarm sound at a certain temperature. We'll call this the warning temperature. And set another temperature about 5-10 degrees higher that will trigger an automatic shutdown of your system.
There are many free utilities that can do that for you.

Damn. But if it helps ya in a motivational sense: I am also having trouble with blackscreens and whatnot. Might also be hardware damage :(

Perhaps the player base can help fund you to get new gear like we did for Obsidian Ant?

I mean, I havent seen any streams from you digital if you do stream, but you seem to be a positive contributer to this community...

Just throwing this out as an idea...?

Cancelled insurance because you never use it? Isn't that the idea to not use it?
Typically if you have to file a insurance claim, something went wrong.
Its like taking off your seat belt because you never crashed.

Not sure how you handled it, I would be upset.

Now is a good time to buy a gpu as prices have dropped for last year models.

I very much appreciate the thought, but I couldn't possibly accept that - aside from anything, while I was the one with the first UA video, I haven't really been that involved in the community, and in any case I earn enough that I should be able to cover it. In a normal month it wouldn't be an issue, but I'm currently doing the whole Bank of Dad thing thanks to my daughter's lack of forward planning, so it's going to be a couple of months. Parenting is apparently incompatible with hobbies, even when they're long-since past the age where they should be self-sufficient...

Indeed. We had the same thing a few years back - one of our dogs fell down the stairs and broke her neck, and the insurance had been cancelled for the same reason. Cost me about £10k over the following year (sadly, the dog died a year after the accident, after making a miraculous recovery...still, worth every penny).

That's the weird thing - I had the alarm temp set in the BIOS at 60C and the shutdown temp at 65C, which is comfortably below the rated maximum of the CPU (i5 2500k). It wasn't even overclocked either.

That's not so bad, man. What was your old setup? CPU wise you just need a good quad-core, GPU wise you really only need a 960 and above to get great frames. Motherboards are very cheap. I can absolutely help you select parts and stuff if you'd like.

EDIT: Just read that you were running a 2500k. That's an awesome, but ancient CPU. There are many good options for cheap around.

ED is one of the worst load balanced games I ever seen. With my current card its a bit better, but with older cards they practically always ran 100% load on planets/stations. If you thought to take a break, and your cooling isnt up to snuff, it could damage your system.

Yep, it was a 2500k, Nvidia 780 GPU, 32GB RAM (needed for work stuff...I run several VMs). It did the job pretty well, to be honest, but I'm considering taking a slightly longer break from the game, living with the laptop for a while and saving for a hex-core i7 with a 970 or above. Even a quad-core i7 would allow me to stick 64GB in there, which would be extremely handy.

I'm just sitting here wallowing in my misery for now ;)

I would wait a bit if you're going to grab a six-core anytime soon. The Intel ones are very, very, very underwhelming (buddy just got the low-end 6c/12t i7... blegh), hopefully Zen will inject a little competition into the market. Same deal with the new Nvidia GPUs.... if AMD doesn't put out something nice soon, I'm afraid we'll all be paying the Intel/Nvidia tax for the next several years with only 10% improvement from the previous gen.
