I really don't get this whole Unexplored thing or something with the game is seriously out of wack

If I pick just any system and I CAN NOT buy any exploration data and in the galaxy map the system view is "redded" out meaning to me there is no exploration data. So I travel to said system and it's a binary system with no belt or planets. Both stars show unexplored. Does that not mean no one has sold exploration data? So why is it I can then scan both stars and sell the data but then go back to look at the system and both stars show discovered by someone else?

What am I missing?

This gives you the opportunity to make money by exploring systems more than once. If the first time a system's data was sold it became explored to all Commanders it would be quite boring. Either that or your Nav Computer update license has expired so you don't get updates from Garmin (tm) any more.

I can't remember, but I think you can only buy system data whilst docked?? Just a thought, I wonder if you can only buy system data from the station it was sold to?

How so? if we all went out and had a crack at it With 400 Billion star systems we might finish in 300 years!

Think of it like this. The very first person to scan an unknown system sells their data to the stellar cartography guild and they get marked as the original discoverer. That data is not available to you to buy. You can "rediscover" and sell that data but as you aren't the first you are just providing them with updated records and adding that system data to your ship's computer along with the original discoverer's name.

The reason is because even though we have 400 billion stars after a few months you are going to have to travel a very long way to discover anything truly new if everybody shared the same cartography data. Compartmentalising it in the way they are means there is stuff for new players to "discover" right away.

Yes, for the whole galaxy. But for a 200-300 ly bubble around our starting systems? That will all be discovered soon I imagine, if not already.

Thank you all for the detailed explanations but I still feel something is out of whack. Take the system Nu Indi for example. I just scanned the entire system, not one body shows a discovered tag. Went and sold the data for almost 40k and received no first to discover bonus. So I go back and look at the system again and this one shows no one as discovering anything. Unlike other systems I've scanned that after scanning shows who discovered it.

I've not seen any devs say that the tag gets added instantly, you may have to wait a day or two.

From the processing perspective, it's probably more efficient for them to batch process all new discoveries periodically, rather than 1 or 2 sporadically all the time.

Thanks Loskene that kinda makes sense but at the same time it seems like a broken idea. If the system is populated we should be able to buy the exploration data while docked since in essence it's already been discovered.

Thanks for that explanation because I was assuming it was just broken.

Very long way? Nah. Only 700k systems have been explored so as soon as you get outside populated regions you'll quickly start finding systems that haven;t had any visitors. This is particularly true if you go vertically since most explorers travel horizontally from the populated bubble.

id sa a 1000LY bubble has been explored at most but beyond that its exponetial

IDK if it's broken per se, but it really jars me the way it is.

If anyone's scanned a system and sold the data, it should be "discovered" for everyone and buyable anywhere, by anyone, period. Finessing it any other way seems silly to me. If stellar cartographics is everywhere and a central repository, and Galnet can communicate across a galaxy... well then the data should be visible to all players in near real time if anything.

I keep seeing that the player base wouldn't be able to go everywhere available in X-hundred years real time anyway, so how about we make it interesting and more realistic?

Well, that's maybe another 'mission' or trade option that can be added into the game. Let ships help propagate the cartographic data across systems. There is a suggestions forum...

Couldn't agree more.

At least post 1.1 you will know if you were the initial discoverer of something as when you sell it you will get a congratulations screen showing what you were first with.

But that's the thing I don't think it's working right. Of course I didn't write the system name down cuz quite frankly I'm dog tired but I just found another system no data, scanned all bodies and none had discovered by tags on them, sold the data and nothing. This system had no stations so I'm thinking maybe that doesn't matter. Who knows. I need 6 more million to finish outfitting my Asp for my trek across the stars so once I get 5000+ ly out and make my return trip if it's still not working I'll document everything and throw a ticket in.
