I Shot a Cop...guess what happened!!!!

Situational awareness? So like you can tell the difference between 25 meters and 125 meters with your radar?
You can anticipate an Eagle or Viper boosting across your path from 50 meters away?

True, it's easy to stop firing if you catch the interloper out of the corner of your eye, but there is no way the radar/sensor is going to tell you everything.
I have killed over 10,000 NPC and rarely ever bump into a cop let alone hit with friendly fire, but it still happens.
I just don't continue to blindly fire and never receive a wanted status when I have occasionally hit them (and that's since v1.2).

No one can anticipate a "locked on target" gimbaled weapon swinging wide for no good reason, but it does happen. And quite often I might add.
I'm referring to a target less than 1Km distance and centered.

I have 800 something kills, that amounts to several thousands shots fired. Of all these shots, four didn't hit the intended target. And of these four cases, I could have avoided two of the friendly fire hits if I haven't become cocky and fired despite clearly seeing the cop in close vicinity to my target, and one was due to me underestimating the blast radius of a missile.

In-game, are you CMDR Emile Antoon Khadaji?

Friendly Fire, unintentional it may be but it still deserves light punishment, I call this 'Time out'. Those five min spent sitting in the next nearest system sulking because I had to leave a good spawn behind while waiting for the timer to run down. Spent to much time doing that over the last couple of weeks because unlike some commanders I'm not yet perfect even with my new Elite status and pushing 11,000 + kills. Never shot a cop yet its always been the un-scanned wanted pirates and even the occasional miner who got involved in the fight. I even killed one miner recently in a head on collision, I was boosting into a dark area where all the fire was coming from to save his mining ass and didn't see his Asp speeding out, it was a near perfect head on Vulture v Asp. He exploded and I had just killed the character I was trying to save, that cost me an hours downtime + 6000 credits for murder and one insurance claim for a stock sidewinder, and I rightly deserved it all, far to eager to join in a fight before checking out the situation. Yes I wish I was perfect. Never seen one of those warning messages the op talks about but I would love to, I think that's pretty cool so well done Ed.

Hi All

Well it sometimes happens....that dozy cop wanders across your burning laser in an RES melee!
Yup..it happened last night, to me in LFT 90.... I thought "!! Fine...bounty...inconvenience.. the whole nine yards!!!"
But...... no .... what????
In bright red letters came the comment from said scorched cop.........
"I hope that is not what you intended Commander!"
That was it!! Nothing else! YAY!!! FD have finally seen sense on the friendly cop/navy accidental single shot nastiness!
Anyone else seen this?, as I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere.:D

I love that sort of thing.
An NPC civilian said to me "Hey, Im flying here" when my laser hit him.

:p No, but I get your drift: my phrasing is certainly mistakable. I of course miss my intended targets, but when I do, I take care not to hit someone else. (I edited my original post to make that clearer.)

Sorry, but I read your original post and it just sort of set off a memory in my head. :D

I lost the book years ago, but I've just gone and bought an e-version of it.

Sadly "situational awareness" is useless when a cop unexpectedly flies into your line of fire from outside your view with like 300m/s. It's only possible to avoid if he is fairly far away. 10 out of 10 times, when I get a friendly fire bounty, it's because there suddenly is a cop up in my face. Even single shots from 3 large lasers pretty much always go way over the friendly fire threshold.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make in a different thread that only got responses of no, its your own fault, you need better trigger discipline and situational awareness.

How does looking at your radar help when a ship that is not near you but is drastically above or below you can have its blip move over or near the point representing your ship while you are turning/pitching/yawing in the exact same way that ships that are about to suddenly appear in front of you? Not all players have a VR headset (Oculus Rift, etc) and are able to free look while maneuvering. Not all ships have the same field of view to see other ships coming from behind moving into their fire until its too late, especially if the ship is approaching from your underside. Fire discipline does not help you avoid hitting a ship that suddenly enters your line of fire from off-screen when you have already fired a projectile with travel time.
