I should really know the answer but....

Having just purchased an Asp and deciding to go off exploring I was wondering if when ED Horizons lands next week will I still be able to find plenty of airless planets to land on or will they be in short supply? I was considering heading off towards the Orion Nebula but don't want to get half way there when Horizons comes out next week, and discover I have a lack of places to land. I need to experience landing on a planet as soon as Horizons is out! Sorry for the dumb question.

You don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere when Horizons lands for another reason... the SRV needs to be installed and you're going to need to be at a station for that.

Also we never really know when the live snapshot is taken that will be used for the beta, it can be anything from a week to three weeks old. So when the beta starts, your beta commander might not even have that Asp. But if you want to be on the safe side, don't leave until next monday. Or at least don't go too far away.

PS: Congrats on your awesome purchase. The Asp is love, the Asp is life :D

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes loving the Asp it feels like I'm flying again after grinding in a T-6 for weeks.

Airless planets don't vanish if they get discovered. ;)
You will find a lot of planets to land on, you just might find some that are already tagged with "discovered by <CMDR_name>" or you might have to fly a bit until you find a undiscovered system - usually something around 1000 ly for completely undiscovered systems or ~500 ly for undiscovered planets.

2000 ly out and you are surprised if you find a system that is already discovered by somebody.

I have bought the beta.

Your OP was somewhat misleading. It appeared that you were under the impression that Horizons would be released next week, not the Beta.

I'd hold off on heading out into the black just yet. Typically the snapshot for a given beta is taken a week or so beforehand, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's an ironclad rule. Once the Beta starts, then you can take off with your 'live' commander and still have your test commander in a civilized system where you can outfit properly for landings, etc..

Some 60billion planets... To land on. I think... And the beta starting position will be on the surface of a planet, as David B... Hinted nicely. You good. Fly safe

For the beta, just self-destruct. You'll be back at the last station you docked at.

What happens in beta, stays in beta, so its cool.

You just will want to return for when Horizons is released to grab your SRV and stuff.

With 400 billion star systems, the planets to land on should be a much higher number than 400 billion since including moons, there should be several times that number of celestial bodies even counting only ones without an atmosphere.

It is said that 60% of all planets and moons should be open for landing which makes the number well into several trillions.

At 47 years old there's not much chance of me visiting all of them before I curl up my toes then?

I'm actually hoping we keep the 1.5 beta commanders. Then I don't have to go through hoops to be sitting in a Cutter ready to crunch it on a sandy hill somewhere :)
